Would you own a 300 Win Mag if you didn't hunt? Details inside, I need your opinion

For years I shot a Hart barreled 300Wby in a M70. It was what I cut my teeth on for LR shooting. Loved that rifle. I’d shoot coffee cans filled with water at 500 yards (the water evaporated on impact) and bowling pins at 600 yards. Tons of fun. You learn so much about shooting.

30-06 is just a minor step up from 308.
Well that’s pretty accurate with factory loads, particularly 165 grain and lower. Hand loading though takes advantage of the 06’ powder capacity with heavier projectiles. My mountain do-it-all ‘06 flings 180 grain at 2,875 fps at under book loads. The .308 (although also great) can’t come close.

No. I have a 300 Wby and I can only shoot seven or eight rounds (with a PAST shield) before I stop. Not something I would want to shoot all day. Good thing is that it hasn't moved zero in thirty years unless I change loads.

Nothing wrong with getting a 300 Winchester Magnum if you don't hunt. I have a 4 bore and I don't hunt. It uses 450 grains of powder and 4 ounces of lead with each shot. Recoil is about ten times as much as a 300 Winchester Magnum. Probably more. But it is a fun gun to shoot and I like it!

No, but I do hunt, so I own one and my goal was to buy a rifle as light as possible without losing accuracy and without ordering a custom rifle. I went with a Springfield Armory 2020 Waypoint.

Well I just read the opening post and few others. For me, Hands Down 30-06! I don't own a 300wm, but if my hunting could benefit from it, I would! I wish I did need one. But often target shooting, no way do want one. But I've got plenty experience with the others. Yeah, 308win is a fine cartridge, and wouldn't mind having a short action light weight! But the 30-06 is several steps well past the 308 in capabilities, and everyone knows that's with bullet weights 180gr up to 225gr, and pushing em with authority! And you can go down to 120gr, and do some amazing things! 06 I believe is the king of all when it comes to versatility in any one diameter!
It looks to me like the 7mm-08 is mor capable in the 308 cartridge than the 30cal!

My shoulders are skinny and a guy let me try his 300 Win Mag. Felt recoil wasn't too much stronger than my prev. Mosin-Nagant 44 (had corrosion: terrible groups), or my pair of Enfield #5 "Jungle" Carbines.

This young Norwegian lass (no shoulder muscles) can handle a .458 Win Mag without any real complaint ( comments 2:33 ). The reason they seldom shoot this rifle is because of ammunition Costs.
Turn volume up- the river makes it difficult to hear her speak. I think you guys Can handle a 300 Win Mag. if you don't mind ammo prices. $$.

Well, I mostly load my own , so it costs even more.🤣🤣

No, I had a 338 Win Mag when I lived in Alaska and sold it when I left for the lower 48 in 1989. About 25 years ago I quit hunting all together and sold all my hunting caliber rifles. That 338 was a bear to shoot, even with a sissy pad I rarely shot more than 2 to 3 shots at one time. I have very few today, a few 22 LR, one .556, one 6.5 CM, one 6.5 PRC and a couple pistol caliber lever guns.
