My wife and I hit all the yard and garage sales in our area a couple weekends ago. While I've heard stories of people buying guns at garage sales, I've never seen any firearms for sale at a garage sale myself. I decided to be pro-active though and at every sale I asked if they had any camping or hunting stuff or firearms for sale.

I hit pay dirt at the fourth or fifth sale of the day. One women said she'd inherited a "small revolver" from her Dad a few years ago and still wasn't sure what to do with it. I told her if I saw it, I could at least probably identify it for her and possibly make an offer. She went and got it and it was a S&W Model 49 in about 90% condition. She hadn't decided to sell it yet so I left her my card and told her that if she did ever want to sell it, I would be interested.

A few days later she called and said she'd decided to sell it. We settled on $300 for the gun, the pretty battered original box, a well used Safariland holster and a mostly full box of Western .38 Special ammo.

I picked up the gun tonight. She showed me her Dad's old Michigan Pistol "Safety Inspection" card which showed that he registered the pistol in September 1978. According to her, he used it twice: Once he fired a couple warning shots at a pair of car thieves trying to steal his car in Detroit and another time he grabbed it when a male intruder walked into his house and confronted his wife. He scared the intruder away and no one was injured.

The gun is a 49, no dash, with a serial of J1328xx. Can someone give me an estimated manufacture date?

Oh, and how'd I do for $300? I'm not up on the value of the J frames, but that seemed reasonable.

1973-1974 J000000-J250000

Supica lists 37 in VG condition right at $300, so I'd say fair enough

You gave her more than she would have gotten from a gun dealer and you got it for less than you would have paid from a gun dealer, so I'd say you did alright. Those are great little guns.

I might have to go to more yard sales...

estate sale in VA 1994, S&W model 19 .357magnum

This reminds me of a time way back in 1994/central VA when I saw a listing for a estate sale that had a older model 19 S&W .357magnum 4" bar. It was unfired and the price was only; $50.00!

I about fell out of my chair when I saw the price. I did not have the $$$ but really really wanted to nab that S&W .357magnum, :(.

I finally took some pictures of the "Yard Sale M-49".

The first pic is everything that came with the gun:

Then a couple of beautry shots. Not bad for a cheap digicam taken outside on a cloudy day and about five minutes of prep.

Nice photos, nice gun, and you got the story of how the gun was used by her father to boot - a good deal all round. I picked up a 49 a couple of years ago, no box, but like yours but some honest wear on it. It came with a holster, also from the 70's like the gun, its interesting, to me, how holster makers then left the trigger guard open rather than covered or enclosed in leather.

It gets better: The seller just e-mailed me and said she found the original receipt and owner's manual for the gun and asked if I wanted them. She offered to drop by and drop them off.

(The manual in the pic I actually got off eBay right after I bought the gun. I'll probably sell it after I get the original)

You were fair, you did well for the nice old S&W ect. BUT,not meaning any dis merely educating the forum; the revolver pictured is NOT 90% according to NRA or any other standards. It is 80 or 85% -charitably. 90% has no substantial bluing loss and very faint turn lines if any,no wear on grips ect.

I picked up my Model 49 (mfd. 1973-74) in December 2002 for $250.00. I purchased it from a retired cop who purchased it new in 1975. He carried it as his off duty/back-up gun until 1993 then retired it to his nightstand after he retired. After buying it I took it in to a gunsmith for a complete checkup. He cleaned out 27 years of lint, dirt etc and lubed it up. Other than that everything was good to go. Told me it will easily last for the duration of my law enforcement career.

Considering inflation I'd say that you did okay. I'm also a fan of J-frame revolvers and I really like the Model 38 and Model 49 Bodyguards. Congrats and enjoy.

Nope Master Blaster, Michigan required that I take it in for a mandatory "Safety Inspection" *cough* registration *cough*

There are no paperwork free handguns in Michigan.

Just thought I'd post an update:

The seller found the original receipt and brought it by the other day.

The gun was bought by her Dad on Sept 4, 1973 from "Tom Nicols West" (Sporting Goods) of Dearborn, Mi.

Purchase price:

M-49 Revolver $97.00
1 bx shells $ 6.75
Tax $ 4.15

Total: $ 107.90

Right now the revolver is at Mag Na Port in Troy for some gunsmithing work. I found that two of the cylinders were harder to cock then the rest. They said their standard action job would solve that problem. The timing and lock up though were spot-on. I should be getting the gun back tommorrow.

On Saturday I'm having a friend shoot it. It might be going home with her. She's being stalked by her ex and we're meeting at the range to go over some drills Saturday. She's carrying a little Tomcat .32 right now, but if she likes the M 49, it's her's.

The aged Bodyguard soldiers on - I hope your firend never needs it, but it she does that's a fine anti-stalker gun. Kudos to you for offering it to her.
