Recently I did a review of cold bluing products and in that review I included corrosion resistance but used only BC Barricade. I stated that I intend to do a review of a variety of gun-centric rust inhibitors. Im amassing (my wife says hoarding) quite a stock pile of CLP products focusing on the “P” aspects. To that end I want to make sure I have a comprehensive list of products gun owners might use to stave off rust on their firearms so Im coming to you for suggestions of which products I should secure for this evaluation. Ive scrubbed the store shelves of Gander and Cabelas and Bass Pro and Farm and Fleet and Fleet Farm as well as online outlets for rust inhibitors that cant easily be found. Id like to do a side by side evaluation of about 15 or 20 products and want to know what everybody uses to keep your gun rust free. I figure that by the time I buy the most common 15 or so that would cover the lion’s share of what the average guy uses.

Im focusing on manufactured/commercial brands and wont be evaluating home brews or gunsmith “secret recipes”. So please list em up and tell me that no evaluation would be complete without including brand “X”. I plan to post this request in a few different areas on the forum to attract as many suggestions as possible because some guys are hunters an others are only target shooters or only waterfowl hunt but don’t deer hunt so if you see it multiple times you need only reply in one thread. Thanks for your help.

No, let's keep this focused here. Cross-posting isn't such a good thing.

You're specifically looking for a commercial product sold as a gun care thing? Or just whatever we use so long as we didn't invent a new mixture?

Break-Free CLP has been more than good enough for me these past 30+ years. I'm not in need of anything "better".

We've lots of heat and humidity, with heavy dew most mornings and close enough to the Gulf coast and chemical industries that anything unprotected rusts fast! Maybe the Pacific Northwest is tougher, but I'd doubt it -- silver flatware turns black in a year or two sitting on a shelf indoors around here.

Sam As a member of this community and several others populated by gun owners I read often about this product or that product to protect our guns in the filed or during storage. I myself use many. My goal is to get a lists of the common products members of this community us on their guns to keep rust away. I plan to purchase as many of those products as I can get my hands on and do a side my side evaluation of those products in regards to their ability to inhibit rust and then share those results with the community. Because I only visit a few core pages here (like so many others) I hoped to broaden the response pool by asking folks in a variety of user groups to solicit the maximum number of products gun owners use so I can go out and buy those that are commonly used. I don’t want to miss some popular gun rust inhibitor that a lot of guys use that I haven’t heard of yet. My goal is to focus on purchased products rather than home brews almost nobody uses.

Well you could start with the products that your tax dollars were lavishly invested in years ago for the Dept. of Defense. Breakfree CLP has lost the MilSpec certification and now G96 CLP meets it. I also have used nothing but Breakfree CLP and it has performed extremely well under the worst circumstances. It dissolves all but the heaviest carbon fouling and lubes and protects extremely well. Be aware that your review/testing idea has done before by many individuals and their reviews are all over Youtube. Breakfree CLP and Eezox usually come out on top. IMO Breakfree CLP is really all that you need to buy.

And that may be the case but I am still interested i going forward for a few reasons.

1. I enjoy doing this stuff.

2. I want to see for myself

3. The other comparsions were usualy only small sample siazes with only a couple products in the test.

4. The other tests did not have a UV component and we use our gun, tools, fisging gear, lake front gear, cars, outside.

Definitely include LSA (Lubricant, Small Arms). It's still available out there as surplus and is much cheaper per oz. than stuff in the store.

You can spend anywhere from $3-9 an oz for manufactured stuffs that Clean, Lube, Protect.

Mine cost $.24 oz, works as good or even better than the commercial stuff.

As long as I dont spill it, Ill have my homemade CLP for GENERATIONS. It is Synthetic.

NOW, they probably have a mix similar to mine, but YOU get to pay a HUGE premium to buy theirs. $.24/oz or $3/oz.

be safe

Gun care products, CLPs....

I've heard of a few CLPs & firearm care products that have + feedback or good press. It seems that a new brand or format hits the US market every 3/5 days. :D
I prefer these popular brands: Ballistol, Gunzilla, LPX, Weaponshield. There's also: Rand CLP, FrogLube, Eezox, Slip2000, Flitz, IGG(Italian Gun Grease), Hoppes Elite, Breakfree, Miltech 1, Gunbutter, Ed's Red.
I'm sure there are a few others that may come to my mind later. :D
Cleaners/rust prevention are in www.Brownells.com www.midwayusa.com www.Natchezss.com www.policehq.com www.galls.com www.glockstore.com www.cheaperthandirt.com .

A full scale T&E would be interesting to see. Many gun owners & hunters like products like WD40 or Mobil synthetic motor oil.

I've been using Slip 2000 as it is not petroleum based - which makes waste cleanup less problematic. It also meets the "D" milspec for CLP.

You might consider good old Mobil 1 synthetic oil as that is a popular substitute for CLP amongst AR owners.

Based on posts and PM’s here and on other sites where I made the same request, I begun to generate a list of the rust inhibitors that I will secure for this evaluation. The product list thus far is. In no particular order

G96 CLP

Eezox gun care

M-Pro 7

Gun Slick Gun Seal Rust preventative

Breakfree CLP

Frog Lube

Ballistol

Birchwood Casey Barricade

Rem oil (with Moistureguard)

Rem oil (regular)

Shooters Choice Rust Prevent

Strike Hold

Viking tactics Rand CLP

Hornady One Shot Gun Cleaner & Dry Lube

Clenzoil

WD-40 (blue and yellow can)

WD-40 specialist Corrosion inhibitor

Fluid Fill Rust and corrosion protection

MILTECH-1

Hoppe’s Lubricating oil (with weatherguard)

Hoppe’s MDL (Moisture Displacing Lubricant)

Hoppe’s Elite gun oil

3-In-One oil

Pennzoil synthetic oil

Im sure the list will grow. Additional suggestions welcomed

Time to break out the credit card. Based on web searches, the shipping on some of this stuff is nearly as high as the product itself. This may end up costing a small fortune but I will have a lifetime supply of gun care products when Im finished.

No Gunzilla? No Weaponshield?....

Did you see; www.Gunzilla.us ? The CLP has a few + factors & was in use often in SW Asia by US military forces. Mpro7's LPX has a few interesting videos online too.
There's a new CLP co-engineered by a ex-SEAL but I'm not sure of the full name. It's not Frog-Lube but a lot like it. I'm curious too about Rand CLP. They say it has a vegetable oil base but it seems to be 15-20% higher in cost than other CLPs like LPX, Breakfree, Gunzilla, etc.

BTW; I like Ballistol because it's non toxic, CFC free, safe to use with bare hands, has a light pine tree scent(to me), and can be also used around the house or business(hinges, latches, bolts, etc). On most firearms you can use Ballistol on wood, metal, rubber, polymer, etc too.
The only big - is the company spray cans are only 6oz.
I recall them being 10/11oz in the late 1990s.
In 1999, I cleaned/lubed my cousin's junked out old 1100 12ga shotgun. A few hours & a big can of Ballistol gave the firearm a new life. :D
It was like a late night basic cable infomercial.

EDIT; I found the new CLP website, www.seal1.net . It looks decent but I'm not in any rush to buy it.

Rusty I just ordered gunzilla since its web page said its the world's best CLP. :what:

Im having problems with the seal1 website. Its not taking my order.

I've heard good things about ballistol, but eezox has been my #1 choice for years and use it for everything. Hard to find sometimes, so I stock up from Kentucky outdoorsman in Corbin when I go there.

BALLISTOL!

I know its already on the list but wanted to yell it anyway! It's just THAT good! :what:

Add me to the Ballistol crew, as it is my first choice for all cleaning, lubing, and protecting all parts of my firearms, from metal to plastic to wood to leather.

But I'll also add that once the guns are cleaned and good to go, I will add a light coat of Slip2000 EWL on all critical moving parts like the BCG on my AR's. Do I really need that? I don't know, but it's what works well for me.

Scott Lee; sales....

Id suggest sending Scott Lee, head of sales; SEAL1 a message.
Email; [email protected] .
I checked too & it seems they want to sell/market it directly thru retailers or dealers.
If the firm does online retail sales, I'm sure Scott Lee can tell you, :D .

Rusty
PS; if you want a "boutique" CLP collection, add www.italiangungrease.com . The Youtube clips are informative & it looks impressive but ads-marketing are supposed to make you want it. "Needing it" is another story. FWIW, I've seen a few online reviews by black powder shooters/target gunners who like IGG.
