Your Local Powder Situation?

I learned my lesson from the Obama years. Those were hard times for a reloader. I was in a Sportsmans last weekend on Saturday to replace a 3 weight fly rod I broke and on Sunday in Cabelas to look for a Wheeler scope lapping kit. Both times I didn’t bother checking the level of primers and powder on the shelves. Fool me once and all that.....

I bought my Win SPPs from Brownell's; total with shipping and hazmat ran it up closer to $200, but now I have 12K primers - enough to last me a while

I bought 10k from Scheel's this week. That gives me around 40-45K of small pistol primers. That should last me 24 months. I really need to get stocked up!

When I'm below a years worth of components for any one caliber I start to get antsy. Then again, I buy dies and components for guns I'm planning on buying. I might need professional help.

Current guns I'm ready for:
anaconda
Garand
1894
Man's got to think about the future.

I remember people saying they would quit driving if gas ever sold for more that $1 per gallon.

I have to drive.
I don't have to reload.
I'll adjust my hasty statement to only include rifle ammo tools. I wouldn't reload .30-06 stuff at those prices. As much .45 Colt and .44 magnum as I shoot, I would still for those.
Of course this is contingent on being able to afford factory ammo. If the prices on that go through the roof, I guess I wouldn't have a choice.

Seeing as how I was the one that diverted this thread, let me help get it back on track. :)

During the ‘13 component shortage, there was a vendor from TN showing up at the local gun shows that was selling pistol powders (Bullseye comes to mind) for $40 per pound. And some people bought it.

So? There is no such thing as gouging as I and others have repeatedly shown. He priced it at what he thought the market would bear, and it turned out he was right as folks bought his product. I would rather have something I might need readily available at a higher price than not to have anything available at any price. NONE of the gun/big box stores around here carry anything larger than 1# containers, so I buy either through my old gun club or online where I can buy 8# jugs.

Bass pro has re stocked....... E7DEF322-8846-4823-9E04-C6EA1019E319.jpeg
Good news is Midway is shipping same day now and has run a free shipping deal recently.

Here in Nebraska pistol powders are scarce. The shelves at our local Cabelas were virtually bare last week.

The majority of my dollars are spent at a local, family - owned gunshop, (Old West Guns, Kearney, Nebraska). A couple of weeks ago I was able to pick up 1 lb of HP-38 and 1 lb of Titegroup $22 each. I've also purchased a good supply of primers from them.

Side note, if any of you collect old Colts or pre-64 Winchesters this is the shop for you.

Technically you cannot gouge at all on firearms because in today's day and age they are not considered essential. When talking about price gouging most of the time people consider this with life's Essentials like gas and milk and bread and possibly now even toilet paper.

Yes, I am glad this guy did this. Word got out that he was buying up any powder from the other vendors and then marking it way up. When powder became more readily available, people quit buying anything from him. He could not sell enough to justify coming to our shows. We now have a few vendors that sell at decent enough prices that it is more cost effective to buy at the shows instead of online. Free market works both ways.

Exactly. the market and buyer sets the selling price, not the seller

The local shops around here seem to be pretty well stocked. There are a few of the most popular powders, like Varget, missing from the shelves. The prices seem to be whatever full retail is. The same with primers, $38-$40/1000.

Last weekend Sportsman's has no Hodgdon or IMR powders but a decent section of Alliant and Ramshot, Primers are still mostly cleaned out except magnum size but I found a 1000 pack of CCI pistol primers on the shelf and grabbed it. I also got a cheap pack of .38 Special bullets. Bi-Mart has been cleaned out for a while and I haven't checked the LGS lately.
I did get an interesting email from Brownells at the end of April with the subject
"Can't get the powder you need? Try these ALTERNATES!", advertising Vihtavuori powders and citing the Hodgdon and IMR equivalents.
