I really like the Yugos, they are solidly built, and mine is 100% reliable, but if only they had made them in a true carbine length.

Every time I look at mine I get to thinking, screw the BATF and their pointless regulations, where's my hacksaw at, but of course I never do, jail just isn't for me.

I know that the Chinese Paratroopers are out there, but the build quality never seemed that solid, anyone know if they ever made a short barrelled Yugoslavian.

You could shorten it to 16", as long as you left the fixed mag, removed the bayo and GL (which you would be doing anyway).

The trick would be pressing the sight block back on and tuning the gas system.

I saw recently a letter on the sks forum from the BATF that stated removing the grenade launcher isn't a violation. Heck in california yugos can't be sold with a functioning grenade launcher and they sold a bunch of them here. I have two, one has a muzzle break and the other had the grenade launcher removed with a chop saw. I have to tell you though yugos are just heavier than chinese rifles to start with even without the launcher. I'm comparing it to a norinco and a paratrooper I have here at the house. Mark

While they never made a 16" bbl, they did make one without the GL and extra stuff out front. It is called the M59 I believe, it looks just like a Russian or Romanian SKS. They are harder to find and a bit more expensive but are an interesting variation.

I want one, when I find one, I will let you know how it compares to the regular Yugo SKS.

[ I have two of M59s. Unless you are collecting SKS variants, don't get all worked up about finding one. They are pretty much identical in form and quality to a Romanian SKS except they don't have a chrome bore. Most of the ones sold in the U.S. have pretty worn finishes, beat up wood and have dark bores.

Do yourself a favor, get a nice Russian or Romanian. It will be a better rifle.

There are some pics of an M59 here:

I am collecting SKSs. I want the Yugo M-59 just to add it and I also want a Romanian SKS but I haven't seen them around lately. I could of bought one at the gun range this winter for $100 but I passed on it because it was pretty beat up.

I have the Russian and it is a great gun, best made SKS IMO.

Keep an eye on the C&R Trade/Sale section on this forum: http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=603

I traded for a real beatup Romanian there a while back. It's got no finish has some minor pitting and the stock was a mess, but they have a chrome bores and this one has a nice smooth trigger so it shot well. In fact, its the best shooting SKS I have with the exception of my unissued 59/66.

I ended up getting another, nicer Romanian for the collection, again from that forum, and put a fiberglass jungle stock that I painted OD green on the beatup one. It's my primary plinker now. Once I find somebody to parkerize it for me it won't even look bad anymore.
