Good afternoon,
Anyone used ZIP for 9mm before? If so, I'd like any details. My bullet choices are 115 NOS JHP, 115 HDY FMJ, and 124 FMJ. I'm not finding much data. I would prefer to use the 124s since the first two boxes of my reloading career are 124s and I'm trying to kind of compare everything on the same playing field as much as poss. Also, I'm trying to conserve my JHPs until I'm closer to finding "my" load.

If I do go the NOS 115 JHP route, Ramshot's online data lists the 115 NOS JHP with ZIP specifically. In a case such as this, is it necessary to cross reference to another manual or two, as I would usually do?

I think I might be one of these (knuckleheads) who gravitate to the less popular powders (For 9mm I have Herco, American Sel, 800X, and ZIP...and on the popular side- HP38). I might be paying the price now with limited data..?

The 800x is not necessarily for 9mm

Thanks very much,
Tater

There is data at the Accurate website.

Download the Western Powders 5.0 PDF file.

No.

Wow. Much better info there. I didn't see much in my manuals or the online resource I was using. I guess the Ramshot website would be a good place to look. Duh, I thought I was there though.

I'm trying to find it in the bullet key but what is the 124gr MIL FMJ (MIL?)....k found it-"typical military ball- Exactly what Im looking for, thanks.

FWIW, ZIP is one of my favorite powders for target/plinker loads. It won't get you top velocity, but for something comfortable (and economical) to shoot LOTS of (or to show off by shooting fast!), it's great.

1.10 COL seems short? The first two 9mm I did were 1.13 and 1.15.
What kind of bullets were they? I was loading 5.2 grains of unique at 1.160 oal, 124 RN and switched to hollow points, also 124 gr. For the particular bullets I was using, I had to change the oal to 1.11 to equal the same volume inside the case where the powder is. Both bullets were 124 gr, just one type RN, the other HP.

Thanks ATL. Yea I noticed it looked like the least velocity powder in the Ramshot line, for 9mm anyway.

What the hecks the difference in full metal jacket and TMJ? They are jacketed, but you can see the lead if you look at the bottom...if that means anything. I dont have experience with a whole lot of bullets.

Dont forget CMJ or complete metal jacket... For the most part it is a play on words as manufactures want you to feel like their bullet is different or unique.

I would say that some bullets which are said to be FMJ have exposed lead core at the base of the bullet. I think Hornady is like that. Typically TMJ bullets lead cores are completely covered even on the base like Speer bullets.

You've identified the difference. Whether or not the lead at the base is exposed. Some folks want complete metal jackets so as to eliminate lead particles in the air.

TMJ's are Speer, Plated, Total Metal Jacket, No lead showing

CML's Same thing

FMJ are Jacketed not plated and your right they show lead at the base

Hollow Points you have to watch, Gold Dots from Speer are plated and not Jacketed

Thanks for the info fellas. GDs are not jacketed? Didnt know that.

LOL I thought CMJs were Confusing metal jackets.

Because of the process GD bullets are technically plated but because the plating is so thick they are equal to jacketed bullets. They produce them that way to bond the core to the "jacket" to prevent separation.

As for Zip, no reason why it won't work since it's very close to W231/HP-38 in performance. Even though the charge weights are slightly different you would be hard pressed to see any difference in the finished produce when loading Zip and W231.

Thanks folks. I loaded some up last night- 4.0 gr Zip 124 FMJ 1.10-1.11 COL
Hope to let em rip today. The Ramshot line wasn't listed in my Auto Disk chart which I thought was weird. Had to mess with it til it threw the right charge.

As you should for any of them, charted or not. You always have to check to see what it actually throws.

I've had good success with American Select in the 9mm. Very clean burning. It measures like any other flake powder. Alliant has reload data for American Select.

For sure. Didnt mean to imply I dont usually check. I actually have an overchecking obsession that Im trying to get rid of right now!

Yea. I think AS is becoming a bit more popular. I like it very much also.
