Something to keep in mind...
There has been many public shooting ranges shut down in the USA because of people that don't clean up after themselves and leave trash everywhere.

When I first bought my place, I had an old TV that I thought would be fun to shoot. I won't do that again, cleaning up the broken glass was a PITA.

drobs, a thought did cross my mind that in time I'll need to pick up some glass... and I don't mind that at all. That being said, my part of the world and your part of the world are so different that often what's normal there would be absurd here and vice versa. So no worries here about that glass. It's not a real shooting range, it's just a small piece of land in the middle of nowhere, a public property, where local policemen and local hunters decided to come to practice shooting in their free time. You can't walk without walking over the small 9mm cartridges. And those policemen won't even notice the glass, yet alone care about it. No-one else goes there. It's very scarcely populated area. You can't close something which was never opened in the first place, something which doesn't really exist, that's just a glade, like a field, surrounded with trees on small hills.

Now that you have been shooting for a while, have any of the police who gave you some problems at the beginning become more friendly? You mention that policemen use your range also; have any of them tried shooting your revolver? It would be fun to see them get the same smile on their faces that the rest of us get when making lots of smoke!

And to follow up to J-Bar's post, how do you like your gun? Ready to restock on powder, caps, and ball yet? Any tricks you've learned for loading and shooting it? Are you using a capper or putting the caps on with your fingers? What powder charge are you using?

How about feedback from your friends, are they looking to buy guns yet?

When I was younger, in my 20's - last year of university, I had 2 handguns - a Glock 21 and a Colt 1911, a Mossberg 500 - 20 gauge shotgun, and a 22lr rifle - Marlin 60. I took a bunch of close friends shooting. Most of them soon bought their own guns.

Are you finding that to be the case?

J-bar,
at the beginning, problems where of administrative nature... police had to talk to my neighbours to see if I'm problematic person and such... I waited for a registration paper a long time because they lost my file... etc. There's no such thing as "become more friendly" because once the paperwork was finished I had no more contact with the police and there's no reason for me or for them to have a contact.
Local policemen use that location too, yes, as an informal and unofficial range... but I've never seen anyone there. And I hope it will stay like that. It's not a populated area. And I have no idea how often policemen and hunters go there to practice. Once a week, once a month...? I think it's a small chance that we'll be there at the same time. I live in a city, and the shooting location is far away, about 30 minutes by car, towards the state border, so I'm told that the border police practice there.

drobs,
I don't like my gun, I love my gun. It's not perfect, because I still feel what I wrote in my very first post, that the grip is too short. For me the perfect gun is Schofield. Absolutely everything about Schofield is perfect, except that it requires B-category licence to own it. So I can only have airsoft version of Schofield. Walker would probably be the 2nd best gun ever, and I intent to own it, hopefully silver version by the end of 2019. Colt 1851 would be the 3rd best gun ever. 1851 is prettier than Walker, but I'm impressed by the size and the history of Walker.

Initially I bought larger quantities of powder, caps and balls, so I'm nowhere near the need to restock yet. Maybe I won't restock caps and balls ever, since I'm moving towards reloading.

I don't think I've learned any real "tricks". I've learned:
- to take it apart and clean it a bit faster each time when I come home;
- when I find a wad which I have just shot I can re-use it one more time;
- it's good to quickly spray a bit of Ballistol everywhere after each 6 shots;
- all that talk about spent caps and where will they fall and can they jam the revolver and how to prevent it, all that philosophy about installing this and that... needless; it can simply be solved by just LOOKING every time I cock the hammer - did the cap fall off or stayed on the nipple or on the hammer; if I see it there, it takes about 3 seconds to remove it with fingers.

I don't have a capper and I don't intend to. It's way more faster and simpler (and cheaper) to put caps on by fingers then to waste time filling the capper. The easiest part of loading is to put caps on, especially Remington No.10.

For my fist ever shooting I used 15 grains. The last time I used about 22. I think a bit less would be better, maybe 20.

My friends love it of course, but for now they don't intend to own anything similar. They have airsoft guns and participate in large airsoft battles.

1861, the thread in the link bellow may answer some of your concerns about the short 1851 grips (Colt SAA uses the same grips):
https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-show-me-your-grip-and-grip-technique.839046/
If the advise given does not work for you, then the only option will be to change the grip frame to a 1860 style one as it is longer. But that would require a front strap, back strap, grips and fitting of the three to the revolver and that would be somewhat expensive.

Thanks Mizar, I know all that, maybe I'll change the grip frame one day. I have no concerns about the grip, it's too short for my liking (unlike the perfect Schofield grip) and that's all. I'll either put up with it or I'll change it. I've got used to it a long ago, but never completely.

Great pic, lots of smoke and such. Just one thing, loosen up your death grip on the gun. She ain't gonna bite you! The real key to accurate pistol shooting is to relax. Your grip should be just enough to keep the gun in your hand. You should be loose enough to lift it out of your hand. A retired cop showed me this during my misspent youth. He would win a monthly turkey shoot with a chiefs model Smith and Wesson with a 2 inch barrel. It's the key to my success on long range hits on the Jackrabbits I shoot here.

Just one thing, loosen up your death grip on the gun. She ain't gonna bite you!.

Just let it rock back in your hand and than let the muzzle go skyward. Turn your hand to the right and eject the spent cap while re-cocking it for the next round. Once you get used to it, it is a piece of cake.

I used to shoot a Ruger SBH .44 mag and just letting it rock back in the hand was a pleasure. I could shoot 50 rounds per day with no complaints.

Have a good night.

Jim

Whoah!! That's a blue ribbon pic right there. Were you shooting wad cutters? Do we see the projectile?
That one hands down takes the cake. Great job!

Thanks, glad you like it Eyrie, I love this pic too.
This is cap & ball, I still don't have wadcutters. I have what was hard to get, conversion cylinder and brass casings. In months to come I'll get the rest of what I need for reloading... until then, I'm still using caps and balls.
I think it's impossible to see the projectile at this speed, without some high tech pro equipment...

OK, good deal. A wad cutter wouldn't begin to tumble at that range even after busting that bottle. Have you used WC in your Navy? I've used some in .44 and at under 40 yards they work really well.

So anyway, are C&B pistols a stone hoot or what? You sure do post fine photos, 1861. Thanks.

WC's and various conicals work great in just a C&B, don't have to have a conversion or a reloading setup for those.

Speaking of reactive targets. I had some really skunky beer - bought on the recommendation of an old lady at the liquor store. She was buying it and loved it. I couldn't drink it, it was horrible.
Found putting an empty can on top of a full unopened can, when you shoot the full can, the empty goes flying up into the air.

Shooting into the air with anything other than a shotgun - is unsafe as you don't know where that projectile will land. You need know what your backstop is.
