I bruised the bottom of my foot last week somehow. I couldn't put weight on it, and for the first time in my life I felt legitimately hobbled. I'm a stubborn cuss, but man I really couldn't get around easily at all.
The wife and I had plans for a "walking date" where we walk downtown from our house for dinner looking over the little bend on the river. Those are rare times and nothing I want to pass up
I elected to try one of the canes I made. Mostly because I needed it but also because we pass one little rougher part of town getting there. I've never had an issue, but not being able to walk quickly worried me a bit.
The solid piece of oak felt good in my hand..of course the .380 in my pocket was comforting too
The cane did the trick, and we made it to our reservation with time to spare. My wife said it made me look dapper to boot
My foot has healed fine. I'm stomping around as usual now. The cane is leaning with the other walking sticks in my man cave, but I certainly see the merit in using one. Both as a medical device to help you get around and a last ditch cudgle.
I would love to see them come back into fashion, tbh. It's funny, I remember years ago my wife's grandmother used to forbid her grandpa from using a cane to get around because "it makes him look like an old man". The poor guy, God rest him, was in his mid-80s and afflicted with Parkinson's. The man had the patience of a saint
