I posted a thread on this about a year or so ago.

During Christmas TCM showed several Sherlock Holmes movies.
I noticed that almost all the male characters(young and old) carried a cane.

I did some research and it seems that one of their main reasons was for defense. The reason it was very popular during the 19th century.

I am 57. I don't have a CWP, but I do have a firearm ready in my home and my car.

This year, I'm carrying a wooden cane while walking around Wal-Mart or other public places.

I think it's a good idea.

Elementary my dear :)

What do you think?
Is it time to bring back the cane?

A lot of those canes had swords or long daggers in them - which of course, are mostly illegal in this day and age...

I see your point, but I'm talking pure cane here.

What's that quote from the Eastwood film Pale Rider about hickory?

Eight Months of Cool

I live in an area where an umbrella can be an appropriate accessory for seven or eight months of the year.

In my particular case, a cane, per se, would draw glances in the normal 8-5 day. The umbrella -- at least for the cooler months -- might be seen as slightly eccentric, but nobody would deem it actually inappropriate.

During the warmer months, a hiking staff in the truck wouldn't raise any eyebrows at all. Heck, a feller with as much gray as I have could amble about with a staff and no one would notice.

Well, finally, there's at least one benefit to a certain . . . maturity.

YES!

It goes anywhere.

It's low key.

It's already in your hand if things get hinky.

In the old days, they had schools in London and Paris that taught it's use in self defense.

(tongue in cheek)

Ssshhhh, quiet, styfle, and hush.

Best kept secret weapon of us old impaired codgers. A little training and practice, coupled with a bad attitude and presto the playing field is equaled.

No, the cane is our secret and not for everybody. It is an tool that is earned by surviving life's pitfalls, not a dapper fashion accessory.

Hmmm, good idea doc. We'll keep it just between us old codgers. :D

pbratton -

i read, somewhere, that during the height of their popularity (in the UK centuries ago) they actually DID pass some legislation :(

it's a sad day when you need a license to hold a stick.

A quick search of this forum will find a goodly number of fans of the cane (or some equivalent) because of it's portability and general acceptance in society.

"Nuthing like a good piece of hickory!" said after laying several bad guys low.
