Good job, I say stand your ground if you feel you can(and with plenty of witnesses). Its the only way to get these nuts off the streets or perhaps teach them a lesson. The only thing I would have done differently is to dial 911 on my cell phone as soon as possible when he started to become threatening, put it on speaker and sit the phone down on the table. Can't hurt to let the guy know the police are on the way and listening to everything he is saying.

1/2" EMT (thin electrical conduit) is just the right size and heft, and a rubber tip fits on it perfectly. Not sure if it's strong enough tho' because it has a seam. Maybe if filled with structural foam (etc) so it can't collapse...

I wouldn't use 1/2" EMT, I used to work with the stuff and you can bend it by hand rather easily. It might hurt someone but I doubt it would get the job done in a timely manner, its simply too light. Now if you used 1/2" rigid(the thick wall stuff, with threads) conduit you would have one nice stick that will put someone down in one swing.
 
EMT is pretty lightweight stuff. I was really thinking along the lines of 1/2" gas pipe. The OD of that stuff is about 7/8" and it's got some real heft to it. If you took a solid hit from a 3' length of it you'd be lucky not to have broken bones afterward.

If you were to weld a 5" piece of it vertically to one end it could both serve as a handle and double as a hammerhead.
 
The OP's account brightened my day. I am of the mind that once I passed 30 I was allowed to fight "dirty" and once I passed 40 it was expected. Coming up on 50 now, hmmmm. Sorry if that's not politically correct but one way or another I intend to survive.

I know there are sane guys out there that body build and are proud of the results of the work and dedication. Like any group there is going to be a certain percentage of A-holes within that group. However I don't think anyone that put that kind of effort toward a goal would want that sculpting all diced up. I honestly think if you'd been facing a street rat in an alley the chances of a fight would have been higher but that's a mindset thing.

Living here in Michigan I can cc my pistol, I don't ALWAYS do it but I ALWAYS have a good folder on me, maybe two.

Carl, I saw your other post-bagel threads and had not read any of them. So I started with the first so I might understand.

The whole thing was rather interesting to say the least and many of us have been in similar situations without the knife. I may need to start carrying a suitable knife more regularly.

This whole thing started because of a spoiled kid and a pushy soccer mom wife. I have no sympathy for them. I hope both the kid and wife have learned a lesson and the husband was no fool. He might have been a bit pushy too, but he was not stupid.

You have to laugh about the ticket. He deserved it. I would imagine he has had more than a couple choice things to say to his wife and kid.

I was glad that the police sorted things out appropriately.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to "fight like a man".... don't want to fight like a girl either. I don't want to fight at all. You did good.
 
Yeah, I want peace until I call in massive airstrikes or artillery. After which, it's usually peaceful again...
 
Good job Carl. Stand your ground against bullies. I wish you had had something better with you. But even a basic cane could have given him a few good jabs in the right places to put him down. I'm glad the witnesses stood up and gave good testimony. But I'm disappointed first by management for not asking the woman and her child to leave for acting like that. And second, for no one else stepping in or up for you. I for one would have stepped in to ask the woman to bug off and stop being a bitch and for her and her kid to learn some manners. And I definitely would have stepped in to help with the ogre.

I apologize for the way humanity has gone, and am glad you are ok.

Wow, man. Nice story. Well told. Entertaining. Educational. Happy ending. Always like to see villains upbraided in front of wife and child, for whom the episode may prove equally educational. (Likely not so for the goon, though.)

This is a case in which I would like to have seen Conan hosed down with pepper spray.
 
In this sort of situation, a knife is an extremely intimidating weapon. Glad this story had a happy ending.
 
I have ALWAYS carried a knife, not for self-defense but as a very usefully tool. If I had no other choice of weapon, then I would use it. I just pray that it, like my gun, is never used in self defense. I was just thinking that I need to loosen up the clip on it as it is too hard to draw quickly as it is.
 
Had a similar incident around here a few years ago- some idiot skinhead at a rural convenience store decided to beat up a Vietnamese young man passing through on his way to a vacation house. When it gets out of hand, the Vietnamese kid grabs a kitchen knife off the display rack and fights back. Big stupid skinhead ends up dead.

This state has an interesting law that requires the State to pay your attorney's fees and lost wages if a jury finds you acted in self defense. The Vietnamese kid had a top class lawyer and the State paid the bill. One less halfwit Nazi harassing honest folk.

The mind (even the mind of a moron) is a powerful thing. Visualizing an old man beating a brute with a cane is almost comic....visualizing an old man eviscerating a brute is shocking....knives impart those kind of visualizations.

I'm not sure that I'd have gotten into a fight over a restaurant seat...but Mommy Dearest pushed the incident into the "life-or-death" category. You may want to steer clear of Panera for the immediate future....and consider putting a restraining order on that whole family....

Now I'm glad I upgraded my EDC (& covert SD) knife from an Endura to a Becker Necker (I use my Squirt for mundane tasks)....

I can't imagine anyone ever speaking to an older person the way they spoke to you. That is unconscionable to me.
I hope that if I am ever confronted with such a situation, I would keep my cool the way you did.

This was what was bothering me, too. Some goon is bothering an older gentleman in public, the other people present should voice their concerns - loudly.

After I thought about this for a moment I thought of myself in the position of a bystander. I can't imagine hearing some jacked up musclebound s**t-for-brains threaten to kick the ass of an old, partially disabled man, and I just stand there and do nothing.
I can't believe that out of a whole shop full of people not one came and stood net to Carl during that encounter. Spineless.
 
I've never been one to carry a knife, other than a small pocket knife for boxes, string, splinters, etc. But this thread opened my eyes, and I now carry one. I'm not into fancy, expensive knives, it's just a Smith & Wesson SWHS1 I found on sale for $12.99, but it's sharp as hell, black and scary looking! It opens boxes too.

YES you are EXACTLLY RIGHT !!!! A bit off-topic but it burns my Assss when I see people post here at THR that if you see a assault going on , EVEN IF YOU ARE ARMED -- do nothing but call the police !!!!

I am no " John Wayne or Rambo " it could be my upbringing or personal moral code --- I find it next to impossible to just watch as a woman , old person/disabled , or a child gets stomped in the ground. I will stand up ---- I've been shot on two different occasions and stabbed/cut on three others { gotta LOVE Chicago !!! } ---- I have also been arrested more then once for "doing the right thing" ----- I would do ALL OF THEM over again -- BUT -- maybe a bit differently as I've gotten a bit older and wiser.

Yes, but after my last meeting with the deputy DA handling the case for the prossicution, I was told not to talk to anyone about it.

So...


Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was this old guy. All the old guy wanted to do was get an everything bagel and coffee, but it was not to be. There was a big huppla, and when the dust settled the big guy that was going to assault the old guy ended up in jail.

But...

It gets better.

The big guys wife who called him on her evil summon-a-demon phone, was arrested some days after the event for "inciting/instigating a fellony assault. But it still gets better. In this far far away land, when a person is arrested, they have to pee in a cup when they get to the jail. The big would-be bully tested positive for some drugs. I think steriods may have been mentioned in this tale. The law got a search warrent and raided the house of the evil bully and his wify, and found a large amount of illeagal steriods and 'other' substances. A siezed lap-top had eveidence of distribution. The attempted assault charge on the old guy is now the least of his problems. He and the bully-summoning wify are now in jail for distribution of illeagal substances. No bail because they are upside down on thier home, no money for bail, and a flight risk. The spoiled would be demon child is in the hands of the grandmother of the wify.

The old guy in the far far away mythical land, still goes to Panera for a toasted everything bagel and coffee.

All this of course has no relation to any case currently pending in the local court system, and any resemblence to persons living is very stricly a coincidence. Really.:D
 
Im glad that this worked out for you. That kind of stuff really ticks me off. I am 23 and have calmed down a lot in my..old age. (i promise thats true) and as I get older and my bodies wearing out (back surgery already) I too, find that i dont want to fight fair anymore either so im going to be the exact opposite. Im a bigger guy, 6'1, 230 lbs so usually i dont have much of a problem. My own pride is my biggest enemy but its a work in progress :)
