Actually, my 3 Day Carbine Operator Course lists ammo reqs as 1300 rds of 5.56- not 500. Actual ammunition expenditure is situationally dependent on the number of students, quality of students and environmental considerations.

Re S&W M&P 15's. Several months ago there was an article in SWART magazine- "A Tale of Three Smiths". 3 M&P15's were run for over 24,000 rds over the period of several months. It may answer several of your questions.

I use the Larue rail because i strongly believe it is the best. It also requires that you remove the front sight base to install it, something that some won't/ can't do.
