Gonna sell my 1960s vintage Colt national match gold cup. Looking to buy a full sized 1911. I want to buy a good one once. What do you like and why.

Is your 1960s Gold Cup causimg problems? Why not just shoot the snot out of that one?

And many people hate on Kimber for some reason but my Kimber Stainless ii 45ACP(made in NY) I bought last year has been flawless. Factory mag and Wilson 8 rounders. The pistol has been 100% reliable and scary accurate. The iron sights are dead on. So with my one and only 1911 being a Kimber and my experience with it I recommend them.

You understand you are going to get a phone books worth of recommendations...

You need to give us a better idea of your purpose and what you might be looking for. As LS1 suggests... what's wrong with your current Colt?

It depends on your price range but in the production category I maintain that Dan Wesson makes the best production gun out there, especially if you get one of the older Valors.

Worth noting that the stainless DWs do have some issues with galling, but DW will fix em up quick if you do have a problem. I like the duty treat better for looks anyway, myself.

I have 1911's from 5 manufacturer currently, for me the best bang for the buck is Les Baer. If I had to sell them off the 3 Baer's would be the last to go, the very last would be the 45 Stinger.
I have a Alchemy Custom on order, and without it even have been built, I am sure it will be excellent. I believe it is the best value in the $3000 range.
There a a lot of used Baer's in as new condition for sale in the $1500-$1800 range.

Funny you should ask. I was a 1911 guy for A LONG TIME many years ago. (Military and SWAT).. Well I had not owned a 1911 for decades until last fall when I picked up a 1911A1 that said 'US PROPERTY' on the slide. It was sold as a 'reproduction' of the original government issue 1911A1 and it is made by Tisas. I bought it just for 'old time' sake as this was the first hand gun I had used to 'eliminate' a threat many years ago, in a land far, far away!;) It cost less than $350! Well here is the kicker, IT OUT SHOT A KIMBER AND A SPRINGFIELD that cost 3 to 4 time that!!! (This really upset my friends who owned the high dollar guns);) I was involved in some training for a local church security team yesterday and used this 'old clunker' to shoot their training drills and I out shoot all 8 of them with their 'new' striker fired autos.:D This one is a keeper, and I would to 'go in harms way' armed with this gun any time.:)

I'm in the "Wait. Do what?!?" camp. What is it about your vintage Colt that makes it seem like replacing it is the way to go?

I ask, in part, because one common response in these threads runs along the lines of "either it's a Colt or it's a copy." Another common response is "Spend a couple of hundred extra and get a Colt."

Just a thought: You could either just keep shooting the Colt, or maybe use it as a base and have some custom work done .....

I'm gonna assume (since the OP hasn't gotten back to us yet) that he likes 1911s and simply wants one more suitable for carry and/or defensive purposes, complete with the current fashions (lowered, flared ejection port, skeletonized hammer, night-sights, undercut trigger guard, front strap checkering to start with, maybe?). Didn't specify alloy or steel frame ...

Best production pistol is Dan Wesson in my opinion. I bought a Valor last year and between if and my Les Baer Premier II it was really splitting hairs.

If it's all about accuracy it's hard to beat a Les Baer for the dollar but that doesn't mean they are cheap. I got a pretty good deal from 1911 Heaven but some don't like dealing with him. He is very "competitive" when it comes to his fellow dealers if you know what I mean.

I picked up two Dan Wesson’s. IN my limited opinion, they are among the best production 1911’s before you get into Les Baers, Ed Browns, and on up.

Great fit and finish, forged parts, accurate shooters.

I'll chime in with another vote for Dan Wesson. Unless you want to go whole-hog and get a custom piece like a Wilson, DW is as good as it gets for a factory 1911, in my view. I have a Valor V-Bob that astonishes me with how well-made it is, even considering its pricier nature. I've had a high-end Sig that shot as well as the DW, but then you've got the external-vs-internal extractor debate to contend with, and ain't nobody got time for that.

When I could not buy a Dan Wesson PM7 during the "Great Shortage" years (only 250 made for CA each year), I compared different 1911s and ended up buying a railed Sig 1911 XO - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-the-gospel-of-browning.862343/#post-11368972

Between the front strap checkering and anti-sweat grips, no issues maintaining good grip even when palms get sweaty.

While many have trouble feeding SWC/HP bullets reliably in their 1911s, my Sig 1911 came with tightest chamber match barrel I have seen (Started competing USPSA with 1911/Sig P226 in the 90s) with almost no leade yet reliably fed various brand 200 gr Lead SWC (Even Lee 200 gr SWC with shorter nose) and HP bullets without issues with factory, Chip McCormick Power Mag and Wilson Combat 47D magazines. (Sig was so reliable that it ended up replacing very reliable M&P45 for nightstand duty as I shot it much more accurate) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/oal-for-45-acp.863361/#post-11386357

When many complain about parts breakage, after 7000 rounds, Sig 1911 continued to produce 2" groups at 25 yards and now at 10,000+ round count, has not broken anything and only needed recoil spring replacement (And I don't have to fuss with extractor adjustment with Sig's external extractor) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...omo-reloading-range-test.578444/#post-9415802

1911A1 ... Tisas ... cost less than $350! ... IT OUT SHOT A KIMBER AND A SPRINGFIELD that cost 3 to 4 time that!!!
Armscor 1911 Citadel is match grade version of Armscor RIA 1911 Tactical with tighter barrel and tolerances and produced slightly smaller groups than my Sig 1911 in this 15 yard comparison before I move onto 25 yard testing (Sure surprised me) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/rmrs-own-line-of-thick-plated-bullets.761471/

What motivates you to sell the '60's Colt? Plenty of 1911's that can be great shooters in a range of price points. If you have a budget in mind that will help to narrow down some choices.

Hmmmmmmm...

Put me in the corner of explaining exactly whats wrong with your current one?
+1
Exactly my thoughts.
I think we also need some more informations from the opener. Carry gun? Materials? Sights? Budget?

OP posted full size 1911 and could be testing the waters to see what other members like about their full size 1911s

And I provided the reliability and accuracy of my Sig 1911 that shot 10,000+ rounds without any breakage.

At this point, I no longer have a desire to purchase a DW PM7. I do want to pick up a 9mm 1911 but contemplating getting a 9mm slide kit for my Sig.

I have on of those, an A-2 model. I bought it as a way to introduce myself, over three decades a shooter, to the 1911 pistol. I think it was a great choice for someone like me. It's rock-solid, and stone-cold reliable (like the geology theme there?) True, I have no other 1911 experience with which to compare and I have not fired it along anything else yet (despite having since acquired a Remington R1S Enhanced Commander in stainless.) I'm certainly not gonna recommend it to someone looking to replace a Gold Cup Match but, like you, I'd trust this one to have my back any day.

 for your service.

The second hand high end market is down; shop for a nice Wilson, Brown, Baer, etc that had the wrong color grips to suit the previous owner.

I don't know how I managed to get this reply in the beer temperature thread, and without even drinking any beer. But it is still so.

I'm surprised there are this many answers given the OP left out so much important info.

What is the intended use of the pistol? Carry, range, investment, home defense, truck gun....?

Do you prefer classic style, bells & whistles, utility?
