10mm 1911

Picked up a 1066 this morning at my LGS. Thing was clean and tight with few handling marks. Came with 7 mags which is a huge plus. For the price and the extra mags I could not let it go. If you keep up with prices you know what these are going for. Stripped it oiled it and off to the range in the am to see how it runs.
Yeah, 7 mags is a huge deal since even “decent” condition 10XX-series mags are running almost $100 per.

Yep. And about every damn one of them woulda traded for lighter gear if given an option. If you grew up around any WWII and Korea vets, you'd know the fondness we have for the Garand wasn't shared with many of them.
Quote from my great uncle, who brought home shrapnel from near Bastogne "If Patton admired them so much, how come nobody ever saw him packing one?"
Grow stronger … 🙄

Magnum Research has a 10mm that I might be interested in.
It's on their website, but I haven't seen it as actually available, nor have I ever run across one.

“Took it out shooting a few times” means you should’ve had a shooting coach to instruct you.

And that’s regardless of the really dumb fact that it was also a stolen firearm.

"Took it out shooting a few times” means it was not a enjoyable enough to shoot more often. Just did not like the 1006. My shooting coaches were US Army and Marine veterans, oh so many years ago, but thanks for the advice.
And yes, it was a stolen firearm, which my father did not know at the time he purchased it.

Interesting discussion; many different experiences and opinions. I guess I was a very early 10mm adopter. I acquired a Bren Ten during the very short time they were in production, then various S&Ws, a Glock, Colt Delta, Kimber, Ruger, semi-autos and revolvers. My Delta had the infamous poorly supported chamber; plenty of unsupported brass hanging out over the barrel throat. I had BarSto install an early integrally ramped barrel. The Kimber had the best 10mm case head support I've seen. Over time, the S&W semi-autos became my favorites; had 1006s, 1076s, and 1026s. All robust, reliable pistols. Used mainly with reloads equivalent to the old Norma, and more recent Buffalo Bore and Underwood factory offerings. I preferred the 5" guns, but none of the half dozen S&Ws autos I had gave any trouble.

BTW, That original Norma 200 grain load actually did do 1200 FPS or so in my various 5" semi-autos and revolvers..

This guy tested some Buffalo Bore 180 gr that pushes over 1300 fps from a 4.6'' barrel and some Underwood 155 gr that gets 1500 fps from the same gun. Those are some impressive numbers. That 155 gr from Underwood is in the realm of high grade 357 magnum.

JB111, Having chronographed my share of both Buffalo Bore and Underwood 10mm, I'm not surprised at those ballistics. Some 180 grain Buffalo Bore I tested several years ago averaged 1380 FPS in a 5" pistol. More recent production BB tested in the same pistol was throttled back a bit, but still not a wimp load at all.

I tested BB 180 grain .357 in 4" and 5" revolvers some years ago. It actually did the advertised 1400 FPS. In fact, in a 5 1/2" revolver the 180 BB averaged just over 1500 FPS. I more recently chronographed some BB .357 180, still averaged 1400 FPS or so in 4" and 5" revolvers..

American-made at your price-point:

*Dan Wesson
*Ruger
*Colt
*Kimber
*S&W

Non-American made:
*Tisa and Girsan (Turkey)
*Rock Island (Philippines)
*Norinco (Chinese Communist)
*Taurus (Brazil)

My budget was a bit more last month and I bought this Nighthawk Agent 2 in 10mm. So far, I have 800-rounds thru it. The recoil is about the same as any of my .45s, but the muzzle-blast is more.

Well, other then the Ruger and low end Kimber, the others don't match the price point, unless buying used. Smith & Wesson doesn't make a 10mm 1911, and well, the others aren't American.

Alaskan resident and veteran bear guide, Chuke, weighs in on popular 10mm carry guns for hikes into the Bad Bear Bush ...

I have quite a few of those and would go with the Glock 20 as well. I don’t have an X Ten yet so that may change my mind. S&W M&P 2.0 second.

The FN 510 is a bit of disappointment for me as I really wanted to like it but mine seems to have chamber support concerns for an 800 X 180 gr load I’ve shot for years.

I like Glocks but I went with the XTen because the grip fit my hand a little better and had the plate for a dot. Night sights if you like to use them is nice. I had an M&P 2.0 and sold it. My Buddy has the FN 510 and I just was not impressed. I just picked up an old school S&W 1066 and that one is a beast and shoots well actually. The Trijicon lamps were out and they wanted to much cash in my opinion to re lamp, I blacked out the rear and put a Dawson FO on the front. The XTen is my woods gun though and takes hogs well...

Yeah, that M1066 is an old school 10mm beast. I’ve handled and shot all the S&W 10XX models except for the very rare 1046. The DAO 1086 just never suited me. I’m a TDA/SA guy.

I own a 1076 and a 1006 and still occasionally shoot them. The 5” 1006 is actually lighter than my 5” Sig P220 Match Elite, and the Smith mag holds one round more of Best Meter than the Sig.

Remind me again what a couple boxes of 10mm cost?
It's not that bad, 21 bucks a box for range fodder. I pick up the brass and reload it for a lot less. Coated 180s for the range and 18o XTPs for the woods. Wreaks havoc on the pigs...

I highly recommend the DW stainless steel Specialist. It's a really good 10mm, reliable, and accurate 1911. I like mine

My entry into 10mm was I walked into my favorite shop and while looking around found a Kimber TLE II for about $1000. Being a 1911 guy I already had four full size in 45 ACP. I bought the Kimber because 45 ammo was getting harder to find and there was a lot of 10mm (at least at the time) to be had for a little more if not the same price as 45.
Lately it seems to end up ony hip more often than not. Whatever you decide on I hope it brings you much joy. Underwood ammo is a good source for ammo to feed it as well.
