Is this a good price for a BHP Practical?

That seems to be the going rate, give or take a little. Doesn't sound like you are being taken for a ride, but don't think it's a screaming super hot don't pass up on it deal, either. In other words, fair all the way around.

If it has a few hi-caps with it, even better.

That may be the going rate, but they're not selling at that price very often. I saw an excellent Practical on Guns America a month ago for $399. I've heard of even better deals than that. I passed on a NIB Black MKIII for $425 a couple of months ago. Payed $450 for my Silver Chromed with less than one box of shells fired through it.

At that price you can buy one anywhere. I have seen them go for about $100 less often.

About $700 in kali, the silver ones are about $740. They are also not selling any of them. The case has been full of HP's for months now.

Here in MA we cannot buy any new Hi Power, so used ones go for $799 to more than $1K. Used ones must have been in-state prior to 10/98 law, so most are typically >10 yrs old, if you can find them!

That is a vey average price online. Nothing to jump if you don't need or want it but not a bad price if it comes with hi-caps. You can buy new for about that price.

I purchased my as-new-in-box HP Practical locally several years ago for $399 with three high cap mags with padded floor plates. I have seen the occasional slightly used Black MKIII in the $399 to $450 range since then. As previously stated though, it is all relative to your location.

is there any difference between the FN and the Browning? Or are they both made by the same manufacturer, just different roll marks? Which is better in quality? Anybody know?

They are made by the same company supposedly even in the same factory. Just the rollmarks are different. Some people will say the Browning marked ones are a little better and others will say they are both the same.

up a NIB fixed-sighted Browning Hi-Power "Practical
Model" 9m/m for $399.88 + 8% sales tax. That is,
after I was quoted $509.95 for the same gun; by
my local dealer!

Browning doesn`t make the HP. FN is the manufacturer for Browning. FN is marketing the HP themselves and the markings say FN, not Browning. I know the finish on the new guns isn`t as nice as the Brownings.

My local gunstore in DE had an older browning with adjustible sights and 4 hi cap magazines in LNIB condition for $450. They also had a new clone with fixed sights for $249. The triggers on both were HORRIBLE, the worst triggers I have ever felt on any handgun, creepy gritty huge takeup, massive overtravel.

I was thinking of trading my beretta 92 FS INOX compact on the belgian browning but I passed after trying the trigger.

As was pointed out by Dinosauer, FN manufacturers the High Power; the one called Browning High Power is only sold in the US by license and in the rest of the world this model is known as the FN High Power. The Mark III Browning High Power is available and is definitely of a higher quality level than the Mark III FN. I have High Power examples which were manufactured as the Browning High Power; the FN and also one made under license in Argentina. All are the same design but the quality level varies. All function perfectly and none has ever missed a beat. All are very accurate. All had crappy triggers but after a trigger job and removing the magazine safety they are truly a masterpiece. Also the stock grips need replacing in my opinion.

Whatever you wind up paying, HIGHLY recommend the Browning Practical HP; really great gun.

That looks like the factory adjustable rear sight to me. Millet makes them. Personally I dislike those sights.
