LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- A hoard of 87 firearms was confiscated Thursday in a raid on a Lake Forest man's home, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

Citing police sources, the Tribune reported that the multimillion-dollar home is owned by a commodities trader. A man is in custody.

A state police spokesman told the Tribune that the weapons included two .50-caliber guns mounted on tripods. The 5,000 square-foot raided home is in the 1900 block of Telegraph Road, according to the Tribune.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked with Illinois state police to conduct the raid, according to the report.

I am confused. Why is this a story?

If they don't have the whole story there should be no story at all. The only story they have is that there were 87 guns seized. It was the top story on the news tonight. It is like running a story that there was 87 cars seized from a mans house. Ok, but why? There was really nothing else to the story, just what you see here.

I have more than 87 guns, with four being .50 caliber.... three are BP, though. :D

Not enough detail, just a "scare tactic" story.

Aargh!
This kind of "reporting" is why I don't watch television at all anymore, nor read the mainstream newspapers.

This reminds me of when some news journalist (?!?) (NOT!) says an arsenal or whatever fill in the blanks of OVER 100 rounds of ammunition was found or confiscated at such and such house. That kind of reporting makes me angry and makes me laugh too.

The idiots who do the reporting don't even know that most bulk boxes of 22LR come in 500 rounds/brick or a bonus pack of 550 rounds. Heck if you had several calibers of firearms in handguns and in rifles... it would not take much there, would it? Especially if you buy things on SALE, in BULK and/or RELOAD/HAND LOAD!

This reminds me of a former policeman now lawyer who posted on another board where he thought that the former Walmart employee/man who was taken in by policemen because his wife thought that he would go 'nuts' and reported him was BAD or ODD or whatever because he had X AMOUNT OF ROUNDS ON HIM. I am NOT talking about his note to his wife but the amount of AMMO was mentioned asap by this 'poster'. Did the man buy it or have it on him and how many of us have more than 10 or 20 or 30 rounds on US and do NOT think anything about it? Geesh.

I am still waiting to hear more about that story but the man on THAT board immediately called him a name due to his medication and that it was HORRIBLE because he had so many rounds of ammo on him.

Oh well... different strokes and whatever trips his trigger, eh?

I know people who have more than 87 firearms and more than X amount of ammunition too!

Ohhh... those evil guns, eh? NOT!

They better not check all of those women with too much makeup. colognes and clothes!

Some of us used to have OVER 5,000 books and so many tools! Who is to say how much is TOO MUCH for any object, tool, food or water storage, you name it?!

It is NO one's business in my NOT so humble opinion!

More Info here.

The homeowner, Benjamin Stevens, 49, was arrested and charged with multiple felony counts of possessing a firearm with a revoked Firearm Owner Identification card, Lake County prosecutors said. Stevens' card was revoked in 2002 after a domestic battery arrest, a law enforcement source said.

Emphasis mine.

Odd that there's no mention of a conviction. I'm not up on IL law enough to say whether or not an arrest is grounds for revoking the FOID. According to this report it is, but we all know how often journalists flub the facts a bit.

The feds are also testing the .50s to see if they are full auto. If they are, and he's not legally in possession, he's probably going down hard.

Note that not once has the BATFE found a seized firearm to be anything but an illegal full auto after testing. Each and every single suspected firearm has been found to be full auto.

I love it! This is the first time I have ever seen the media use the word hoard and they got it wrong.. I think.

Can hoard be used as a noun? I was thinking it could only be used as a transitive / intransitive verb...

past and past participle hoard·ed
present participle hoard·ing
3rd person present singular hoards

I might be wrong though. What a joke!

AFAIK simple gun possession in IL without a valid FOID is a Class X felony, and thus subject to a mandatory minimum sentence, full-auto or not.

230RN's canned, generic, ready-response to any news reports which, even in the slightest, contain any hint of journalistic fear-mongering, scare tactics, or use of negatively-loaded adjectives --to which anyone can add or improve upon by adding their own overblown descriptions of perfectly ordinary and safe firearms activity:

--------------------

OMG!

I know someone who's got an arsenal of more than two guns and a stash of more than ten rounds of ammuniton! And a hoard of two pounds of gun-powder!

After all, you can only shoot two guns at once, and why on earth would anyone need more than ten shots for anything?

And one of those guns is a seventy-three caliber Mossberg with a rapid-firing pump action!

And imagine that! Two whole pounds of gun-powder!

Why, that's enough to load over three hundred and fifty deadly rifle bullets!

OMG!

Where's my phone?

PS

I should have added to the over 5,000 books and ammunition/firearms post:

A big music collection... oh my and it was ALL kinds of music - all kinds except for gang rap music which I happen to detest.

NAILS, screws, all kinds of things that could HURT someone from many years ago when I built a house, back east, with my late husband. Since we did most of the work except for laying the brick, putting up the frame, etc. --- those EVIL sharp objects could hurt or wound someone!

WHO is to say how much is TOO much? It can't be always firearms, ammunition or reloading supplies? What about knife collections?

TOO many mystery books? Too many religious books or the Bible or any other book? What KIND of music is limited or outlawed and if some is allowed - how many are YOU allowed and in what genre'?

TOO many spices for cooking? TOO many vitamins and minerals... after all too much of that could hurt some people, eh?

The list is endless.

It is, the State Police will send a letter demanding your FOID card be returned to them and informing you that it has been revoked. Not sure what you are supposed to do with any firearms or ammunition, the person I knew was allowed to transfer them to his parents possession for the duration of the legal matter. If I recall he had to jump through some hoops to get it back, despite having charges dropped.

Once again to those who think this is a simple matter of the numbers; All Illinois residents who buy or possess firearms are required by law to have a valid FOID card.

I used to live near Lake Forest, I wonder where the heck this guy was able to shoot those .50s?

Just remember, Friends don't let friends live in IL.

Here in the Red part of PA, 87 guns and a few thousand rounds would barely raise an eyebrow... unless they were owned by an illegal immigrant... or a college kid.

My wife recently asked me why I "needed" so many guns. I asked her why she "needed" so many shoes. Problem solved.
My sister-in-law is a closet liberal. She is a registered Republican, but she spouts the liberal mantra.

She asked me the "Why so many guns?" question. I answered, "Why so many shoes?"

Her hubby sprayed his beer over the table.

If he can put off the court date until the SC rules he has a shot of changing Ill laws as being unconstitutional.

Chicago Tribune has a pretty good article that, if it's accurate, makes it pretty easy to suss out what's going on: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-lake-forest-raid-09-bothmay09,0,5140786.story

Guy in question had his Illinois FOID revoked following a misdemeanor domestic battery arrest in 2002 (no mention of a conviction). He kept the guns quietly. March of this year, he's arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery again after he allegedly shoves his son and wife and hits his daughter. He's released on bail (five grand). The Tribune lists some business practice issues involving his company. If all of those are accurately reported, it looks like he's not a pleasant guy, but he has no felony convictions or even charges to date. Given his financial standing, he could have moved the guns out of Illinois and been just fine.

Five bucks says that this is the first shot in a divorce proceeding, and that his wife's lawyer tipped off the cops in order to incapacitate and busify the defendant.

WIFE. "I don't know what he'll do. Probably go off and pout, shoot his guns or something."
LAWYER. "He has guns? ...they didn't take his FOID after his arrest? Wait, you said he was arrested previously for battery, in 2002."
WIFE. "Yes."
LAWYER. "But after that, he still owned guns?"
WIFE. *puzzled* "Yes..."
LAWYER. *eyes light up; chortles while picking up telephone*

amazing... an accusation where there was no conviction and someone looses their rights?... sounds like violation of due process to me...
