I have a NEW Pietta 1858 and I would like to shoot conicals but I don't know if I want to have a gunsmith open the loading port or without removing the cylinder from the gun to load it. I tried Kaidos 220gr but I couldn't get it into the chamber and through the loading port so I have a couple of questions. 1) Is anyone using conicals in their unmodified 1858 and if so what grain weight are you using and 2) are there any commercially made soft lead conicals in the 180-200gr range and if there are by who? Thanks

1winnen,,check with DD4life over on the 1858 boardthat you also go to. He molds a 195 gr flat point from a custom mold that he had made for Cap n Ball guns. The ones i got from him were first class and his prices are better than you will find anywhere else. Because they are a flat nose they are pretty short bullets so should fit under the loading ram.Ask him and he can tell you for sure because my guns have all had the loading ports enlarged. They are smaller on the first band so they load easily too. 195grs and a flat point, just about ideal for anything you want to shoot with a cap n ball.

FWIW, I think the 220 gr are too big for the 1858 replicas. It's a lot of weight and bearing surface with a properly sized conical.

I use DD4life's 195 gr FPs. Great bullet, great price. Works well in the 1858.

What Captain Kirk showed: Lee .454 200gr cast conical. Works in Piettas, Ubertis and Euroarms Remingtons.

What Capt. Kirk & Hellgate said I've used them in both my Pietta's with out a problem and they are very accurate using 27 grains of Goex BP, and a Wonder Wad.

The remington is the best of the reproductions for the conical, the lee you can put it in on the side and push it in a little then rotate it over under the rammer.

I like the lee ones alot, i havnt used to many of them but i like them better then a ball.

I am using Kaido 200 and 240 gr bullets.
The 240 have to be loaded with the cylinder out of the frame as they are too large to fit otherwise.
The 200 gr fit nicely and accuracy is excellent.
