44mag or 10mm for Wilderness Defense?

I would take the .44 in a revolver. It can be loaded down to special velocities, or maxed out for bear defense. I just feel a revolver is more reliable in all weather conditions than a semi-auto pistol.

    It Never Fails...

I had one many moons ago, but couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside with it. Traded it along with a Ithaca shot gun for a S&W model 18 with 4" barrel and a extra .22 mag cylinder. I had no trouble hitting beer cans at 35 feet consistently with the S&W. Don't know why I couldn't...

what won't you won't shoot at (and why)

I like to shoot bio-degradable targets like potatoes, charcoal briquets, crackers and the occasional water melon at long range.

    Remington 722 in .222 Remington

I don't have that particular rifle, but do have a few .222's. I have found that IMR 4198, or Ball C2 performs well with those weight bullets. IMR4895 may be a bit slow. Sounds to me like the scope has been knocked out of adjustment. You might send it back to be refurbished by Bushnell.

    Flintlock pan polishing.

I find that a polished pan is much easier to clean. Haven't noticed if it decreases lock time, but I will do anything that will make clean-up easier as long as it doesn't affect accuracy or harm the finish on the rifle.

    Flint Size

Try ordering flints from Heritage Products or Stonewall Creek. They usually have all sizes.

    Flint Size

Your flint should be the width of the frizzen or slightly less. At 1/2 cock the edge of the flint generally should be about 1/16" from the face of the frizzen. When the cock is fully down, the edge of the frizzen should point towards the middle of the pan, and should not touch the sides of the...

    Dovetail cut dimensions?

3/8" is a standard dovetail cut for most rifles. If necessary always file the sight, not the barrel, to get a good fit.

.357 Magnum carbine that is not a lever action?

Of course, there is also the single shots like the T/C Contender carbine and others to consider.

Tracking Number of Loadings on Brass

I file a groove in the case head for a lot. In my reloading notebook I keep a record of the # of times that brass has been reloaded. If cracks or splits star to show in a batch, the whole lot gets thrown out.

    Black Powder Power

No surprise to me. Been shooting muzzle loaders with round ball for 40+ years. I have dropped deer with 50. 54 and 58 caliber muzzle loaders. All but one, (shot with a .50 alittle too far back) have dropped with in 25-50 yards of being hit. Many were dropped in their tracks. I have shot...

    Ready For Squirrel Hunting.

Our squirrel season ends at the end of Feb. Right now the squirrel rut is on, and it is not unusual to see 5 or 6 squirrels chasing each other thru the tree tops. My squirrel hunting at this time of year is with my .36 flint lock. If a squirrel stops within 50 yards, he is in trouble cause...

    Hunting Log Books

I started a hunting journal in college as it was a requirement of one of my classes. Been keeping that journal ever since, and I go back and read some of the entries and it brings back the memories of that hunt. I now have over 40 years of hunting journals that I will pass down to my nephews...

    Brass Catcher

I use a brass catcher when shooting my CF semi auto pistol because the indoor range where i shoot does not allow you to pick up your brass. If the brass hits the floor, the range owns it. The range reloads ammo to see to shooters, so they get their brass for free. I don't shoot there often...

Do you camouflage your rifle to match your environment?

I wrap my predator rifle ( T/C Contender in .256 Win Mag) with either brown real tree camo tape, or white tape if there is snow on the ground. The tape comes right off when needed, and sticks to itself.

    round ball troubles

I think you are using too much powder which is causing the PRB to skip across the lands of the bore resulting in poor accuracy. The Traditions guns have shallow rifling and too much powder will cause the ball to skip over the rifling. I have had fine accuracy using 80 grains of powder, and no...

    Favorite 25 Cal?

I voted for the .256 Win Mag. I have a Contender single shot with a 18" carbine barrel in the caliber. It is my goto rifle for called in coyotes. I only wish I could find some Hornady 75 grain HP bullets. My gun just shoots them so well, (1"@100yds) but I have not been able to locate any and...

One of the best 22 WMR I believe

I have a S&W Model 18 with 4" barrel and .22 mag and LR cylinders. The mag cylinder has been on the gun since i bought it. It is accurate (1"@25YARDS) and it has taken a few called in coyotes for me. A great woods carry gun where there aren't any large predators except the 2-legged kind.

I love my 353. It is the most accurate revolver I have ever owned.

What's your favorite 22 magnum cartridge in long gun?

My MGM 21" carbine barrel for my Contender just dolts on the .50 grain Federal offering. 1" groups or less at 80 yards ( my farthest distance on my home range) It is sure death on called in coyotes. I have yet to not drop a yote in it's tracks with this round. Our coyotes are quite large...
