Nice rifle. Simple lines. 3rds touching at 100... if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Seems some people just aren't happy if they didn't find an opportunity to pick a caliber arguement right in the middle of an otherwise enjoyable train of thought.
The 2A1's are built on a heavier version of the No1Mk3's action. IIRC, they determined the 7.62 round needed a stronger action than for .303 British. Difference in chamber pressures.
Y'all ever look into the Israeli bandages with the pressure bar?
A good quality CAT, I'd say is worth having. Also, a roll of kerlix gauze and a roll of vet wrap could be good.
For a handload, depending on the rifle and what you're doing, I'd say 42-50grs IMR4895 under pretty much any flat-base 150gr SP.
Been a long time, but I shot some surplus 147gr FMJ-BT's over 42grs... printed nicely on my 25yd target... 5rds tore up the 1" dot... then busted clay birds at...
I've read lately that WW1-era rifles weren't originally intended for trench warfare, but were actually holdovers from the end of the era of Napoleonic tactics. So, the European rifles we associate with trenches... they weren't really that great in the trenches. The U.S. and British rifles were...
Whatever the aspiration, it can be good to start slow... get a decent rifle and sight and get good with it at 100, 200, 300 yards... see how far it goes, then figure what you need to go farther. At some point, you may find yourself shooting 800-1000yds.
I'm not going to knock the Savage Axis as...
And if somebody really wanted to take all the recoil out of a long range rifle, they might take a .22-250 or 223/5.56 crankbolt with a 1:9 or faster twist and handload bullets in the 75-100gr range. And last I looked, MidwayUSA lists .224's that heavy.
I don't know if it's easy for you to get a lb of Unique or 2400, but I'd recommend 12grs of Unique under a 405gr cast LFP. The time I shot this load in an H&R, it reminded me of my muzzleloader... really soft on the recoil, but really whomped a steel plate at 50 and 100 yards.
Unique, from what...
Not only too big a rifle for the individual, but also too small. I've been on the receiving end of a too short LOP and didn't like it either.
On handloading, you can tailor a load to you and your rifle... more accuracy and less recoil in the same cartridge.
My first time to shoot a .45-70 was with the 325gr... "stuff":cuss:... 5rds and I was done. 405's are much better.
Depending on your state's regulations and what terrain you intend to hunt in, a 405gr Lazercast over 12grs Unique, a pleasant handload to shoot... depending on distance, it could...
A funny thing about people and guns... let's say you and her try a particular .308 rifle... depending on how the stock fits each of you, she could perceive a lot less of a pounding than you do. I've seen stock fit have a huge impact, for better or worse, on who likes what rifle and cartridge...
I've done that. It's not that hard if you're not in a hurry.
Yeah, I hear wives can be funny about this stuff.
I'd say Boiled Linseed Oil. I've heard about it a lot of times for gun stocks... it was a big improvement on an ax handle I refinished.
I'd say get those, or at least the Enfield...
Is the reciever marked "Mod 98" or "Gew 98"? I'm just recalling something I read a long time ago... IIRC, some Gew 98's were rebarreled/restocked as K98's.
IMO, a rifle such as yours ought to be taken hunting. If you do, good luck.
I've seen 68's shot from a 1:12 twist... keyholed and patterned like a shotgun at 25yds. In my old 1:9 twist Mini-14, they tore up a business card at 50yds.
Much as I like the No4 Enfield, I'd prefer that P14 Linda got off one of the heavies, or better again, one in original configuration. Thumbhole stocks vs standard...
A well done sporter can be an uplifting piece of usable art. Personally, I like the looks of that '03 Springfield, but if I had one like it, my preference in sight system would be a Lyman #48 or #57. That scope system has its place too.
Having had some experience with both K98 and Remington 721...
I remember when I was fooling with a K98 and surplus ammo... Turkish magnum crap hit +3'@100yds... Romanian didn't kick near as hard, but still hit ~+12"@100yds. However, with the issued sights, my first and only attempt at handloading the 8x57 round busted clay birds @100yds with a 170gr RN and...
