Personally, I don't see any major advantage to a DA Revolver in 44 Magnum to a SA in this caliber. When you consider the Bisley grip frame on the Ruger SA, it's almost a no brainer to me... The Bisley handles recoil much better than any other grip I've tried DA or SA. That alone, given what I...
Favorite? Where do I start.... I'd have to say my Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Lipsey's Special Edition 44 Magnum.... 3 5/8" Barrel. Very packable in the field and surprisingly controllable and comfortable to shoot, even with heavy loads. It just balances perfectly on target. It's a do it all...
I like the idea of a 32 field/kit gun and think it's about perfect. My preference is the 32 H&R Magnum. It's a very efficient cartridge that shoots fairly flat out to 100 yards when loaded right. I would look for a Ruger Super Single Six in 32 H&R Magnum, which is built like a tank and can shoot...
For woods walking and hunting I've always preferred something light enough in weight to not slow me down, but heavy enough in power to deal with whatever may come my way...
When hunting in Upstate NY, I used to carry my S&W 696 no dash in 44 Special, loaded with some hot 200 gr jacketed hollow...
I really favor the 44 Magnum for these reasons...
1. The 44 Magnum can be loaded light for small game hunting with the right bullet, mid range or heavy for hunting big game - this makes the cartridge extremely versatile
2. The 44 Magnum is a handloader's cartridge, so if you enjoy handloading...
I'm thinking the same as you... I like the 32 H&R, and think it would make an excellent flat shooting woods gun. I was thinking more in terms of a Ruger Super Single Six in 32 H&R Magnum with a 5.5 or 6.5" barrel which would be perfect to get the most from this cartridge. The 32 H&R is very...
Yes, that's possible, but again, we have no information on the mindset or mechanical skill of the OP, so why not recommend a simple machine and safety over something more complex? It's not like a single stage or turret will never be useful, even after a move to a progressive press. Why not focus...
Since there is no way to determine anything about the OP's mindset or mechanical skill set, would you recommend they start with multiple operations they potentially don't fully understand all happening at the same time? Seems like pretty foolish advice to me...YMMV
Since you are starting out, I'd highly recommend the ABC's of Reloading and the Speer and Hornady Manuals. Read and re-read them, then read them again. Then you will have the knowledge you need to start.
I'd also highly recommend a Turret Press or the RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Master Reloading...
I've experienced this before with my Marlin 1894CSS in 357 Magnum when shooting high pressure rounds. I believe it is a problem with the design. Under high recoil impulse the trigger slaps my finger causing pain over time. I've never shot the Hellcat, but believe it is a design issue.
I have...
Here's my set up...
Off the Press
Deprime Fired Cases on a single stage using a Lee Universal Decapping Die
Wet tumble the brass, which cleans them thoroughly, even the primer pockets
Resize on a single stage press, inspecting the cases - Lee Die
Hand prime - RCBS Hand priming tool
On the...
I hear what you are saying about RCBS... Here's my experience.
I like RCBS and like many, I find their customer service to be excellent and very helpful. They generally produce very high quality products.
Having said that, I find their product design, at times, hit or miss.
My Rock Chucker...
Missy, I think for your own safety I have to give you this advice. If you've never reloaded before, I would strongly suggest you start with a Turret or Single Stage Press and start with straight walled pistol cases, like 38 Special. Read a few Load Manuals on how to reload. Read this...
Yes, I'm painfully aware of the problem, and fortunately for me, just moved out of NY. If you are not a NY State resident pistol license holder, you may drive through the state, provided your pistol is in a locked container and separated from the ammunition. You may NOT stop and stay over in NY...
Congratulations on your purchase!
Just remember that at this price range and for that matter anything in the sub $1,000 price range will have compromises that you may want to address if you want to practice more with your rifle and get better results.
The stocks are the biggest issue, and this...
I have a Lipsey's Special Edition Ruger Super Blackhawk Stainless Bisley in 44 Magnum with the 3.75" Barrel. That is what I would recommend in 44 for Bear defense in the woods. The Bisley grip makes all the difference in the world in taming recoil. This gun is dead nuts accurate out to 100 yards...
Self defense while whitetail hunting? What is your threat profile? Without that info, this is too difficult to answer.
When I carried a 44 special while hunting, it was a S&W 696 loaded with 200 gr Gold Dots over PowerPistol when in town, and 240 gr hardcast over Universal while in the woods...
