Did you check off any goals?

I, like many here, have a list of hunting goals that I try to check off as opportunities present themselves throughout a season. With deer season over, for me, I have accomplished three more: 1) a buck while still hunting 2) a deer with a .357 magnum 3) my son got his first (and then second but...

    Hunting apps

I use hunt stand, I know others use on x, and I haven’t seen many threads like this. Do y’all have any recommendations or reasons that you like certain apps? What I like about HuntStand is the stand reservation feature for when hunting in groups. Also, maps, but those are on most apps.

    Adjusting to change (deer)

I recently built a fairly large elevated blind. I’m posting a picture of it before it was done for reference when offering advice. What I want to know is fairly simple. How long does our collective wisdom advise before deer get used to the change and start moving somewhat normally in the area...

    Tree stand lifespan

Curious what y’all think. It just dawned on me that my climbing stand is 12 years old. I haven’t had any problems with it but am thinking of replacing it. In your opinion, what’s the lifespan for safe use?

    Bear Season

Bear season just started here (in NC), but I actually took my first Bear in September, in Colorado. For a longer write up (a five part mini-series deal) complete with reflective stuff, you are welcome to look at my blog (Courtgreene.com). Here's the THR version. This season I was invited to go...

    Cool trail camera pic

I’ve got other pictures of him, but this one made me laugh so I figured I’d share.

    Snuck up close

For some this happens with boring regularity, but it was a first for me. yesterday, for reasons I won’t mention, I very much needed to be immersed in nature. Since nothing is in season at the moment I picked up a Nikon instead of a savage or Winchester and went to my land looking for deer. As...

Now that I’ve actually read it

If you want to read the text of the safe communities act (I think that’s what we call it) which was sent to potus desk today, here it is: https://www.murphy.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/bipartisan_safer_communities_act_text.pdf After reading it, here’s my unpopular opinion. I’ve been saying for a...

    Making converts

I hear quite often in here that the best thing to do with anti-gun persons is to take them shooting. In most cases the hope is that being guided out of their ignorance by a (assumed) safe and knowledgeable shooter will overcome all previously held biases transforming them from gun grabbers to...

As much as I enjoy varget...

It seems to have vanished. So, since I can neither find varget nor h4895, I have to use what I have. Barnes does not seem to live in the same world as the rest of us, so in the .308 their 150gr ttsx (or tsx) loads do not use any of the three rifle powders I have. I have also been cautioned...

Calling All Western Hunters: Advice Please!!

So, I have come into a situation that many of us easterners dream of, being an invitation from a western hunter to join them. The target is black bears and the area is Colorado (unit 33?, again, easterner, not sure how units work exactly) near Wyoming. None of that matters, this is what does...

    I took a friend hunting

I took a friend, colleague, coworker, etc... hunting this year. As I am one to do, I then came home and analyzed the trip to see what I could learn from the experience. So, if I'm allowed, and I think I am, I'll link to the blog post. It's about community and who was involved in what seems like...

    Hasn’t happened in years

It’s probably been eight years since this has happened, but tonight I lost one after trailing blood for 98 yards (measured on HuntStand app from first blood to last blood). The shot looked good in my scope, light was great, and it was an easy trail until it wasn’t. I trained my dogs to blood...

    Pursuit: it’s a book but let’s discuss

I ran this by a few moderators, and I am going to be careful to make this about discussion and not advertising, but there will have to be some back story. I wrote a book called “Pursuit,” yes it is for sale, but that’s not what this post concerns. The book is about my journey through grief...

    Just entered my first draw

I know it’s weird to say that at 40, but draws are not things we see much in the Southeast. Having said that. I decided to put in for maine moose this year, realizing I can’t afford to go, but that’s ok because odds of getting drawn are, what, 10k to 1? now watch me get drawn anyway. good...

    Remington 700 help

I’ve got a Remington 700 sps in .300wsm that has a bent bolt face. It’s been screwed up since I bought it (years ago) but finally got to the point where I couldn’t close the bolt. Off to the gunsmith it went. Today I find out that there’s nothing he can do, it needs to be replaced. Ok, easy...

    New To Shotshell Reloading

Today I was literally handed a box with a shot shell reloading press and a bunch of other stuff. I've been reloading for rifles for 13 years, Handguns for 6. I haven't the foggiest idea what the process for shotgun shells is. I realize there are more steps involved. I also realize that a mentor...

    Winchester 70s

I’ve been wanting a 70 in either .300wsm or .308win for a few years now, and like many when considering a purchase I check availability now and then. They’ve always been plentiful. I am not looking for anything rare or a pre-64 or anything remotely out of the way. I just want the claw extractor...

    Terminal performance of shots fired

There was a thread on here earlier about doing autopsies and learning from them when cleaning deer. It inspired me to make observations when doing so this gun season, so here is what I learned. deer #1: .308 win out of a savage. 30 yards. 150gr Sierra pro hunter. Shoulder shot. The bullet...
