What caliber for a rechambered Yugo Masuer?

I brought out the old Yugo Mauser M98/48 I inherited from my grandfather last time I went to the range and shot a couple magazines through it. The groups were pretty shabby but it is iron sights and a war surplus gun, although I was shooting new PPU ammo through it. I'm not the best marksman...

Mandatory Gun Safety? Yay or Nay?

clickbait title successful! Now, for some actual gun safety. The good kind that lets you enjoy your hobby for years to come without damaging your health and well-being. A shooter on Reddit bought a lead test kit on Amazon and swabbed his guns after shooting. He swabbed his hands as well and...

Vermont AFL-CIO releases pro-gun rights statement

https://vtdigger.org/2021/09/21/state-labor-group-backs-gun-rights-to-counter-rise-in-domestic-extremism. “We all know that the dangerous, violent, extreme right is armed to the teeth, and there is no law that can be passed on the state or federal level that would reverse that fact,” Van...

How important is provenance to you?

I've been wanting to buy a couple more modern rifles lately and am just about out of room in my safe. The bulk of the room is taken up by milsurp stuff I inherited from my grandfather. Nothing all that rare or unique, probably only a couple thousand bucks all told, but I found something...

    Restoring/Upgrading an old pistol

The pistol in question is an FN Model 1910 in 32 Auto. My grandfather brought it home from the Pacific after WWII. The bluing on it is pretty meh. There is clear holster wear. The original FN marked (bakelite?) grip panel on the right side is damaged. There is some minor pitting but nothing...

Developing a new wildcat - what do you need?

I have an idea for a wildcat that I want to try. The idea is to use an existing case that would fit into an existing semi-auto action with existing magazines. I already have my parent case chosen and bullets chosen. I need to know what equipment would be needed to start work on this. The idea...

How come the 1911 was never a "cop's gun"?

The US was among the first nations to adopt an autoloading pistol for its military, following a long history with revolvers. It served for more than 70 years as the primary sidearm in every branch of the service. Given the number of police who come from those branches of service, it seems odd...

Which milsurp would you rechamber? Arisaka or Mauser

I have two that I'm considering rechambering. 1. A Type 44 Arisaka. 2. A Yugo Mauser M98 built on what I believe to be a K98 action. The Yugo has been somewhat sporterized. The nice laminated stock has been cut down and apparently never refinished, so it's dirty bare wood. Someone took a file...

FN Model 1910 - slide lock slips

I have an FN 1910 my grandfather brought back from WW2. The slide lock slips, as in, won't hold the slide back without keeping a finger on it. Is there a repair procedure of any sort as I'd like to keep the gun original? Or will I have to replace the slide lock lever? I haven't put many rounds...

Measuring barrel length with an adjustable choke

I know that the ATF measures from the bolt or breech face. My question is what pieces count as barrel length? Specifically, I have JC Higgins Model 20 with a 27" barrel IF I measure to the end of the choke adjustment collar with my tape measure. I'm assuming that since the collar portion is not...

JC Higgins Model 20 - shorten the barrel?

I have a JC Higgins Model 20, 5+1 rounds of 2.75" 12ga with the 28" vent rib barrel and an adjustable choke. I don't hunt and this was my grandfather's shotgun and I don't really have any use for it. Would you shorten the barrel to 18.5 inches to turn it into a home defense gun? And, would you...

    Rechamber a 6.5 Arisaka to 6.5 Grendel

Quarantine does funny things to a person with lots of time and not much money for expensive rare ammo. I was looking at my old Type 44 6.5mm Japanese carbine and at ammo prices. I've shot the gun before and she's a great shooter, but ammo cost and spotty availability has made it a bit of a safe...

    Arisaka Type 44 bayonet lug

I have a 1st Variation Type 44 rifle in 6.5x50, but the bayonet mounting bits and lug have been ground off. The rifle doesn't have the mum anymore and I was wondering if the removal of the bayonet mounts were also a part of the defacing/de-mil operations. I do have a bayonet for it but...

Ask a liberal gun owner anything

I shall answer your questions as honestly as possible. A little info about me: I am a 31 year old heterosexual man. I am married and have been with my wife for nearly 7 years though we have only been legally married for 3. I have known her since I was 14 years old. I have two children with...

I am apparently the owner of an assault rifle

I went to a pawn shop today to check out a Fender P-bass they had on their website. I brought along my Ruger 10\22 carbine on the outside chance they would want to trade. The bass needs some work but the Ruger hasn't been fired in years. After going back out and grabbing the rifle, I was...

I am the only one professional enough...

More coverage from this years SHOT show. A Century Security officer demonstrated the importance of trigger discipline and Col. Cooper's rules when he gave an impromptu exhibition for a few folks on the brand new tile outside the freshly remodeled business center at the Sands Expo Center.

Just an update on the crazy neighbor

Original thread here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=383089 Anyway, I haven't seen much of the old man since the police last came out. Perhaps his wife has become a bit more forceful in making sure he gets his medication. Only one sighting was when he decided to park his car...

How would you deal with a mentally ill neighbor?

The setting is a relatively quiet urban neighborhood. Tract homes right near several schools. I moved in about a year ago. For the last few months my neighbor (a ~60 year old man with mental problems) has been leaving things on my doorstep. At first it would be a pizza or some flowers. Always...

Sheriff's Rifle from Rambo: First Blood

I was watching this wonderful 80's classic tonight and during the chase through the woods, I noticed that while all the deputies are armed with AR15 (M16 maybe since they fire full auto?) rifles the sheriff is carrying something different. Now I didn't get a good look at it but it almost looks...

How do you store your truck rifle/gun?

When I had my Bronco I used to keep my Mosin M44 under the back seat secured with a couple rubber coated hooks. I would also lock it to the seat if I was going to be away from it for more than a day. How does everyone else here keep their weapons stashed? Have you ever had to get to it quickly?
