Hi Everyone:

I have wanted a pistol caliber carbine for a while to plink with and shoot plates at the 50 yard range at my gun club. While at my LGS buying a couple of other guns, an impulse came over me to look at this little old AR in the corner. It turned out to be a Colt Sporter Lightweight in 9mm. Being an AR-pattern afficionado, I took an immediate liking to it’s retro style and chambering. An assortment of 20 and 32 round mags would come with it. Per the counter guy, it had no box but was reportedly unfired. It looked the part - no wear anywhere and the bore and breechface are pristine. So there I was, buying my first PCC. It ain’t the latest, greatest thing but neither am I. It’s likely ‘92 or ‘93 vintage production. A1 sights. Full stock. I may throw a collapsible stock on it to make it a bit more portable. Can’t wait to see what it does at the range! Anyone else have one of these?

I always loved the thin mag poking out of the 5.56 sized magwell, it just looks like it means business.

I haven’t fired a Colt 9mm AR, but I’ve put easily 18,000-20,000 rounds through Mp5/Mp5k subguns and my Ruger PC9 over the decades of duty/SWAT/SRT training and quals (Mp5’s) and plinking (Ruger) and I really like the 9mm in a handy little rifle.

Let us know how it shoots for you when you get a chance. :D

Stay safe.

Not that model, but I do have a Colt AR6951 (newer flattop model) that I love.

great fun to shoot, super reliable, and reasonably accurate. I like to run carbine drills with it due to the recoil and it doesn't screw up my AR500 tgts at CQB distances.

Thanks!

This has the somewhat rare “CS” marked stock so now I’m ambivalent about swapping it out. Nevertheless, if I do I’d like to do it right. I would want a 7075 aluminum milspec buffer tube and obviously the right spring and buffer. Any 9mm AR experts out there that could advise me about what to get, and where?

Unless you're worried about the internal parts being "clone correct" I'd probably try one of the various hydraulic buffers.

They're a lot of fun! If you go with a carbine buffer tube, you want the heavier 9mm buffer.

H&R is introducing a new clone that looks really cool

I had a Rock River 9mm AR- great rifle, but very hungry. Also, the embassy marines at a place I was deployed used the Colt version. They came out to our location and went to the range with us, and I goit to shoot their Colts.

That thing is awesome! Right before the Clinton AWB I had a chance to pic one of those up. I just could not swing it as I was in college at the time. Very jealous and definite on the radar for later in life purchases!

Thanks again everyone! It’s funny, I started out thinking about all the things I wanted to do to this little carbine - collapsible stock, gooseneck carry handle mount and an optic - now the more I handle it, the more I think it’s just brilliant as it is. The stock is really interesting; it’s stubby - I haven’t measured it but I’d swear it’s shorter than an A1 stock. The carbine is assembled very well and it’s tight as a drum. It’ll be a great range companion to my KISS rifle, a late ‘80’s Colt 20” A2 rifle with open sights. The A1 sights on this 9mm, especially with the larger aperture, seem perfect for fast target acquisition and quick hits on 8” plates at 50 yards, maybe even out to 100. I love that it has a chrome bore and will likely stand up perfectly well to fast firing. I'm not a "mag dumper" per se, but I think it'll be really, really fun to empty a 32 round mag blasting clay pigeons on the berm. I'm really glad I bought it. I went a little overboard yesterday with this Colt, a pristine S&W 29-2 and a new "Ruglin" 1894 in .44 magnum. Well, what the Hell.

Very, very nice, congrats.
Change any internal you want, but leave it stock on the outside.
Nothing uglier than a pimped out classic.

As much as it is easy to bash Colt for the prices both MSRP and Used, they do build some fine firearms. Not that the arguments about how fine for that many dollars will ever end.
But, that out-of-the-box "look" and "feel" are pretty unique. Sometimes the best option is to leave things as they are.

Now, a person wanting adjustable stock, flat-top, EndoMags, and similar cool things can build or buy to that end. This is a great country, we can (almost) do as we please.

Testify, Cap’n!

PO2Hammer: I suspect the deflector is a bit of both; no doubt it deflects shells but I imagine it would be helpful to keep gas away in the event of premature bolt opening. I like it since I’m a lefty; I don’t need hot brass OR gas making me uglier than I already am!

I have one of those blind pin blocked Colts from back then, its an early one before they enlarged the FCG/upper pins diameter too.
