Hey guys, I just want to get some opinions and maybe some feedback from people with experience. I have a 10/22 I love it but I want more accuracy... I've looked at Bull barrels and triggers and scopes, Things to improve accuracy. I was almost set on a certain combination of things when I saw the combined price of over $500 including Stock, Barrel, Scope, and Trigger group. Then I started doing research on different calibers and I really hadn't paid much attention to .17HMR, and was I surprised, accuracy at almost 150yds out of a rimfire cartridge . So that threw me for a loop, then I saw the price; A Savage 93R17 in .17HMR Not .17M2 for only $250 and when I throw a scope of about $100-$150 that only makes $350-$400 respectively. Since I primarily Target shoot from 50-100yds that would be perfect. So I guess my question is what are other good rifles in .17HMR for a price-point of $250-$350 and what scope should I go with? Or since I already have the 10/22 should I upgrade that and if so would a fully upgraded 10/22 out shoot a stock .17HMR Bolt action rifle?

Thanks in advance... Dyson

Cannot answer, as I have no experience with the .17HMR, but wondering where this thread goes. How expensive is .17HMR ammunition..?
It looks like $15 for 50rds. That is expensive for Rimfire but if you look at the alternative of firing a centerfire cartridge say .223 or .308 it's a bargain for how accurate the round is. People also hunt with this round and they're dropping animal's such as Bobcat's and Foxes, pretty impressive if you ask me.

I have a 10/22 that I sent to Clarke many years ago, it is a tack driver out to 100 yds I've never tried it beyond that, I also have a Savage 93R17 FV that is very accurate out to 100 yds. The 17 HMR ammo is 13-15 dollar per box of 50.
A matter of taste, if I were going to hunt I'd use the 17 HMR .

The .17HMR is going to be more accurate at longer ranges because it has a lot higher pressure.

Higher pressure gives you higher velocity and higher velocity gives you greater accuracy at long distances.

The biggest selling point to a .22LR is cost of ammo. You can get 550 round bulk packs for under $20 on sale. The .17HMR is quite a bit more expensive as it will run you $13 for a box of 50.

If you are prepared to absorb that cost then OK.

From what I have read Savage appears to make the best .17HMR for the money.

You need the 10-22 mag receivere for this. 10-22 to Mach II is douable. I converted a rugar target 1022 to 17 mach II, Jurry is still out for me, I like my 22 lr and 22 mag.

Thanks for the info, it seems that the Savage brand comes up a lot. How much did your spend on you 10/22 to make it a tackdriver? I know the ammo is expensive but it is my alternative to shoot centerfire, witch costs a lot more.

The beautiful thing about the 17HMR, is you dont need followup shots at 100:D
And they make you giggle every time you pull the trigger on a little furry critter too. Todd I love blowing things up! :D

reading this got me to wondering:
Do .17HMR and .17mach2 rounds have as many duds as .22lr ammo?
I'd imagine they would, since they're manufactured in a similar manner - but cost more.

Interesting point. So far, I have about 300 rounds through my Savage 17HMR, and the problem hasnt popped up.

With the .22's on the other hand, its a common occurrence, although most are not truly duds, and usually go off on the second strike.

I have had a savage 93r17 with synthetic stock since April and I've put around 1000 rounds through it with no problems of any kind. It's dead accurate at any range I've shot it at: 25-100 yards. Great fun, good shooting gun, but the ammo does get a little spendy if you are just punching holes in paper.

I have a CZ 452 in .17 HMR. I also have 3 .22's. To tell you the truth, you cannot even compare the two rounds. The 17 is more accurate, longer range, and hits much, much harder than a .22. I love both rounds, but I my mind they are not in the same leage.......

A buddy at work has a Savage in .27 HMR. It is impressive. The 10/22 will be cheaper to shoot, but the .17 will outperform it in every facet.

Get yourself a .17 to go along with the 10/22. Apples and oranges, different cartridges for different uses. Both are great.

I just got the H&R sportster single shot in .17hmr and its a blast to shoot. The .17 is very accurate and much flatter shooting than the .22lr.

Honestly skip the .17 hmr. I have one and it NEVER gets use while the .22s get a lot. It is just too inconsistent. It isn't a more accurate round as people make it out to be. It drops less and I think it drifts less which I would have to double check but that's it. What it does is allow people who don't compensate for wind to shoot better groups. The best rimfire shooters still prefer the .22lr due to better ammo. At the price .17 hmr ammo costs I will take a $1000 .22lr and A case of ammo than a $250 .17hmr and half a case of ammo.

I had so darn much fun with my .17 this summer, i bought another one. I never knew that rimfire could be so much fun. don't get me wrong, I have seven .22lr rifles, and 2 pistols. I enjoy shooting them alot, especially my 39a. but my marlin 17vssf with a rifle basix trigger blows them all away for accuracy. go for the .17HMR!

I bought my son a Savage bolt in .17HMR two Christmas's ago. Thought it was a great little gun and ammo was only 8.99 a box. Then it came time to finally clean it and I found out what running a rod down such a tiny bore was like. Have you priced a .17 caliber cleaning rod/tips? Then, the price of ammo went up to 15$ per box. I carry a 10/22 daily with me when on my property, and I don't even bother taking the .17 out of it's case unless my son and I are together. Even then, I won't let him plink with it, it's just too expensive. The .22 is the real working cartridge on our land.

All my respect for the "seventeen" and rimfire magnum shooters....but if I need more power than any hypervelocity 22 LR I go 22 centerfire...IMHO there is not enough performance difference to justify the purchase of a new rifle (granted...you can always find a reason to buy a new rifle....just different chambering!!:D)

From the ammo cost perspective, things are still wacky out there but before the "crisis" it was not uncommon to find cheap soft point 223 on sale for $8 or so.

AIM surplus has .223 for under $5 a box of 20. Not the best .223 in the world but it gets you in the game. They have brass case 62gr stuff for under $8 a box as well. Go with reloading and things get even cheaper. But that doesn't work for all.

Do .17HMR and .17mach2 rounds have as many duds as .22lr ammo?
I don't have a 17, but in my 10/22 the duds have always been due to ammo brand. It could be my gun, but CCI's have never had a dud, but the winchester wildcats have had plenty.
