Looking at a 17 hmr

I can pick my Savage up in a few days and when I get to the range i'll do a range report.

.17 hmr does have its drawbacks: not reloadable and it is around $.20 - $.30 each shot. However, I figure in about a few years the prices may drop down to that of .22lr. Remember, this ammo is carefully loaded so you are getting match grade? out of $.24 each shot. I also don't reload yet and have a ton of brass saved up for when I do. I also wanted a tack driver that is sorta on the inexpensive end, otherwise I woulda built an f-class rifle for several $K, the savage ran me $350, oh and the range where I live only has walk up targets to 100 yrds, no point in f-class if I can only shoot to 400yrds and can't zero my scope to the proper distance.

my $.2

the 17 HMR is a 22 mag necked down to a 17. I have one in savage and it is a all out nail driver between 50 yds and 75 yds considering wind. no wind and at a hundred yds it is stil a tack driver. it came in a composite stock with the bull barrel and detachable 5rnd mag THE 17 HMR is about .25 a round. Rifle on average is about 200.00 to 250.00 so either way it should allow you enough for a decent scope and some ammo its alot of fun and alot quieter then the 22 mag or 22wmr.
***MidwestHuntersOutlet.com*** has a Savage-- 917VR Marlin Model 917VR Bolt Action Rifle - 17HMR, 22" Heavy Barrel, Blue, Synthetic Stock, Right Hand for $233.99 thats Identical to the one I have and love hope its helpful.

I seriously love the idea of a 17 HMR rifle, but the ammo is cost-prohibitive. I say that because there are no varmints to speak of here in NH, so a gun like that would be useful for nothing more than plinking. Squirrels and small game are easily felled by my .22LR guns... for much less.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but shop around! The std price for a box of .17 HMR from Midsouth Shooter's Supply is $9.99 for a regular box of 50.

I ordered a bunch of it last week because I thought it was a sale price and when on the phone, the guys said it's their regular price.

.17hmr was on sale at a local shop and still is as far as i know for $10.99

Let me be the first to say im no expert shot, Nor a competition shooter. But i had a comp .22lr shooter next to me at the range a few days back saying how bad the .22lr guys are beating the .17hmr guys in comp shoots.
He says its do to inconsistency in ammo.

Unfortunately my scope base came loose on my Savage 93BTV17 and i couldn't get it re-sighted quick enough before the idiots on the other side of us decided to shoot a .40 pistol on the 50 yard range and start putting holes in my targets!
So i left, But i know my .17hmr which is 1/4 the price of his Anshultz could give him a run for his money.

Let me tell you this also, As ive been getting into some .22lr accuracy shooting.
Go price a box of Match .22lr ammo for a box of 50, Its about $10 a box and up.

Also remember with a .17 its most likley gonna be a bolt action rifle with a small mag, So you dont go threw ammo like you would with a .22lr semi auto with a large mag.

17hmr

I was at the range the other day and another shooter was using his new HOWA 17HMR and I noticed that all the empty cases were split around the neck. The user didn't seem to care and wasn't interested in talking about it except to say, it doesn't matter I don't reload them. So I moved on but I was wondering if this wouldn't cause damage in the throat. Any replies.
I can't remember the brand of ammo.
