Hello all its been a while. I recently bought new glock 20 sf and finally got it where I'm comfortable on factory junk. I ordered new starline cases and some Hornady 180gr XTP projectiles. Also due to local lack of certain powders I am stuck with my not first choice but Alliant power pistol for powder. My first choice was going to be long shot.

I literally have almost zero load data on this combo. My real question would be if someone can point me in a good direction for another loading manual that might cover this combo? I usually stick to Hodgdon powders where I can usually find something through their website data. I also have a couple of other manuals that don't cover this combo. Close but not quite.

My goal is for this pistol to be my everyday day carry. I want to find a good business load for the woods. When I'm on two wheels or 4 if something were to go in a bad direction I want to have something that would be good for anything from black bears, tweaks, mountain lions or sasquatchs up here in the northern mountains of California.

AA9 Bluedot 800X Longshot are your friends. Many good loads with these powders.

AA9 12.5 MAX
180XTP
1.260 COL
1100+/-FPS Glock 20
THIS IS A MAX LOAD FOR ME. WHAT YOU DO IS YOUR BUSINESS!

Blue Dot 7.5 min, 10.7 max
AA#9 11.5 min 14.9 max
1.260 C.O.L.

Max above should give you close to 1250 for according to Hornady’s 10th Edition.

AA#9 is pretty compressed in the case at max and I’ve found that in some brass the die will close the hollow point just enough to visually see the difference. Starline brass isn’t as bad.

If you want a good hard cast load for the woods, look at Underwood’s 200 gr hard cast load. https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto-200gr.-flat-nose-black-cherry-coated-hard-cast-hunting-ammo/

A stout load of AA9 and 180 XTPs equal great accuracy in my full size 10s. I seat mine to 1.260 as well...

Also, Longshot is a good powder for 10MM. 7.0 min and 8.2 max @ 1205 fps. Not as fast as the 2 above but will work for now. I use Longshot for 10mm range fodder.

800X is my go to for 180’s but it’s been retired for a while now. I still have 4 lbs on my shelf

Alliant has data for Power Pistol on their site using 180gr and 190gr bullets. Not your exact combo, but should give you a starting point. Be aware that they only list one powder charge, which is max. Reduce 10% for a start charge and work up until you get the results you want.

I will be going to appointment this morning next to the store I buy a lot of my local loading supplies from. I guess I will have to stop in and see what's available for powder. I have wanted to try blue dot but or AA9 but always forget about them as its not something i would normally use. If i can find any of the different powders mentioned i will report back. Thanks for all the good suggestions

I went shopping at the LGS this morning. I couldn't find anything good. So for the next trip to the range it looks like a power pistol workup will be the only thing on the menu as of now. I might try to hit the in door range if I'm feeling that desperate as it's cold and calling for snow. I'm not a huge fan of the indoor place but I guess it's better than nothing.

Everybody wants to tell you something EXCEPT what you asked.

My experience with Power Pistol in the 10mm is that it’s a GOOD powder!
Not the Bestest, but quite good. Velocities are a little down from what Blue Dot or my heavy favorite LongShot does, but you’ll get essentially factory level velocities with better than factory accuracy.
The XTP bullet doesn’t really act much different than most other jacketed bullets.
Seating depth is mostly dependent on what functions best in YOUR pistol.

IIRC, I used 7.8gr of PP for about 1,200fps. About 5% below published max.
It was as accurate as anything else, and was powerful enough for any need appropriate for a pistol in the lower 48.

I will keep my eyes open for some long shot or blue dot. I was looking local for another powder for a while and as soon as I ordered it and paid HAZMAT fees it shows up in two local stores before its even been shipped to me. LOL thats the way it goes.

A friend of mine sent me a picture out of his Hornady manual today for my exact combo. If I were going off of the data in my Lyman manual for a similar combo I might have left 4 tenths of a grain on the table if I was truly searching for a max load. I rarely find myself working up to a max published load as I normally settle for accuracy. This case I would give up a small amount of accuracy to get a hard as possible hitter for my intended use.

There are a few more powders available (so to speak) nowadays versus when I started loading my 10mm.

I found that AA-9 worked well for me and my criteria for accuracy and velocity. I have seen others pushing the envelope on loads through the years but I really never found the need.

I admit my 7" barrels do get more velocity than most 5" and that was one reason I went that way. I use mine for hunting purposes and wanted to reach a certain level, and that was accomplished with less than the max load.

I have shot a LOT of the XTP bullets and they preform well. My go-to however is the 180gr Speer Gold Dot. They have been the most accurate and consistent performer over the years.

Another vote for AA#9 and 180XTP's
I was never hugely impressed with AA#9 IN 10MM. It yields about 150 fps less than BD or LS plus takes a lot more powder to achieve it. Accuracy was really good, however. And just about 100% case fill, if not compressed IIRC.
4th or 5th place

Yesterday I got about a 3 hour break in between rain storms. Hitting the out door public range after Bubba gets out of bed in the morning is a little sketchy. I generally get there before sunrise and leave before the really special people show up. Being I only wanted to shoot 20 rounds of 10mm and try out my new unfired CZ 75bd I took the risk. Interesting trip or annoying however you look at it I did settle on a nice 10mm load between Bubba and family making 27 trips down range to scout "free" clay pigeons (thier exact words not mine).

8.2gr power pistol seems to be pretty accurate. 8.4gr power pistol (max published load data I could find) was ok but not as accurate. It seemed to be Accurate and not too far from max which in my case for intended use is probably good enough. If I wasn't worried about Bubba or his 2 year old running around I might have done better but I don't know.
