I posted this to a thread on 1911forum.com and thought I'd post it here too because I think I made an interesting connection. This is a somewhat edited version for clarity.

PCs being 1911s, made by everyone including hobbiests with performance and reliability all over the board. Glocks are like Macs. One company makes them. They're all the same. Costs a fortune to modify and are extremely simple to opperate. Since there is one source and one design they are very consistant.

For a long time I was somewhat biased against the 1911 style guns for no particularly good reason. As I've matured as a shooter and finished growing my hands have changed and so they point better for me now and I've gotten over the wierd feel of the grip safety.

After renting a Kimber Stainless Target II I added the Delta Elite to the 10mms I was shopping for and found a good deal on one so it's on it's way.

The Delta will be my 1st Colt, my 1st Government model pattern gun, and my 1st 10mm. I own lots of differant guns and I expect them all to go Bang when they're supposed to. I expect the Colt to also be pretty so I'm getting some Black Pearlite Ajax grip panels for it ;)

I guess I'm a pretty rare breed. I like both Glocks and 1911 pattern guns. I've got a Delta Elite on the way and I look foreward to putting as may rounds down range as I have with my G24P.

I'm a PC fan but understand where the Macs fit. I love my Glock, but the 1911 really is a great gun.

I think the animocity between the Glockers and the 1911 fans is more of an excuse to start an argument than having anything to do with the quality of the weapons.

Can't we all just get along? For the children!

great post...and a very sensible comparison. I thought that my Glock was the best gun in the world when I was in law enforcement. Since leaving that profession, I have found a weapon that made me re-evaluate my position on the matter.
I originally had set out to purchase a Glock 21, but somehow got sidetracked, and leaned more towards a 1911. Maybe because I heard that LAPD SWAT had chose a kimber as their sidearm, and that sounded cool to me at the time.
Then...I was again sidetracked..when I heard about the 10mm round. It made me seriously re-evaluate my desire to have another weapon chambered for the .45 ACP. I eventually found a gun for sale in the classified forums on ak47.net that really fit the bill for me. It was a Dan Wesson Pointman Major in 10mm...and the seller was in my state of residence.
I made the purchase in person, and had my new piece the next day. I haven't regretted a moment of it. It is the most accurate pistol I have ever owned, and it feeds every type of JHP ammo that I can throw at it...every time, without fail. Also, the 1911 just looks, and feels amazing. The 10mm auto round has convinced me that it is a force to be reckoned with, and I have no doubt that it would prove to be an incredible manstopper, if called upon to perform that task.
I will probably own other .45's, and other Glock's in the future...but my Pointman 10mm 1911 isn't going anywhere. I have even considered having it engraved to make a resale very difficult in the future. But, I think I have enough willpower to avoid that anyway.

IMHO, The Mac is WAY superior to the PC, but i have to use a damn PC cause Microsoft makes every damn thing on the planet ONLY windows compatible. FORK!

Nice comparison though!

1911 = linux/unix

Now that is funny! I can see it from a customizability standpoint but there ain't no way in heck that a 1911 is as reliable as unix. Hell even a glock is not that reliable.

<computer geek rant mode off/>

Our army could sure use some Combat Tupperware, the Berettas just aren't made for that kinda crap.

Military guns shouldn't have external hammers, too much sand and crap can get in

And apparently theres some big magazine issue theyr'e having. Poor GIs, gotta feel sorry for em. Crappy rifles and unmaintained pistols, how do they survive?

feh. it is is you set it up right. I've seen improperly set up linux/unix systems crap out, too.

Ninja....vanish.....

You know what got me about Independence Day? Somehow that Powerbook talks to the alien mothership when I couldn't get my kid brother's Power PC to do jack.

Why can't people simply shoot what they shoot best? I shoot Glocks best, my father shoots 1911's best. Thusly, I have Glocks, and he has 1911's. We have never even thought about getting into an argument or even a discussion about it. People should carry what they prefer, and not worry as much about what others think.

I do like the Mac/PC comparison, though, the original one (many sources vs. one source) that is fairly accurate.

I shoot my 1911, full-on custom and dead-nuts reliable, really well. I can just saw the X-ring out of the target shooting at a surprising pace. I had a Glock years ago when I started shooting handguns seriously and I just could not shoot it like I did the 1911's. I sold it. So my birthday rolls up this year and my wife buys me a Glock, in 40. Dang, TWO strikes right off the bat seeing as how I had never even looked at a 40 let alone another Glock. Well, I figured I might as well deal with it. I ordered a couple thousand bullets, brass and powder. I could not hit a dang thing with it at first. Determined to not be bested by a freakin' pile of imported plastic I went at it harder. I bought a set of Mep adjustable night sights and that helped tremendously, Glock ought to be embarrassed and kicked for the stock sights. I did a Flitz "trigger job" on it with all stock parts, and it feels like it is broken in is about all the help it did. Add one extended mag release and a butt plug and that is how it sits. I have almost 3000 rounds through it now. My shot dispersion is probably about 15-20% larger than the with 1911 on average at any distance, but my split times are DRASTICALLY faster with it. 4" vs 5" at 15 yards for 10 rounds rapid fire, I can live with that. I will put 3 holes in the target with it compared to 2 holes with the 45 and I shoot the Glock better every time I pick it up. A big part of that is the cyclic rate of the gun and the other real factor IMO is the lower bore axis of the Glock reducing flip for a more straight back recoil and a very fast recovery. Ammunition used in the Glock is significantly more powerful than the ammunition used in the 45 too. The Glock has the slide speed of a full race gun IMO, and shoots as flat as most compensated guns did 10 years ago. If I were to play with springs and connectors and so on the Glock would probably outshoot my prized very expensive custom 1911 in all areas but basic accuracy. The only place a Glock can be faulted is mechanical accuracy, I have yet to see one that will go sub 2" at 25 yards.

I shoot both the Glocks and the 1911's, and thank my wife all the time now for buying that ugly soul-less piece of imported plastic. It is the one I reach for even after cutting my teeth on K-frame Smiths and 1911's. I have shot 1911's for years and put an astonishing amount of ammunition through them, and love them. I also recognize the value of the Glock, I can't love them but I do appreciate them :D .

I have been fortunate enough and indecisive enough that I typically choose both. I own both a Glock and 1911. I also love cars...and own a Mustang and a Corvette. For PCs, I go PC, but there is a Mac in the house too. Ahhh!

I consider 'the best of the breed' and buy accordingly.

For a while I used to hit a local coffee shop/bar around 4 pm for a post meeting write up of notes on my way home. I'd plug in in a quiet section with my laptop, order a beverage and work for an hour before the after work crowd rolled in. Kind of a habit once aweek for about 6 mo.s

Observations:

Black powerbook, glowing apple logo: Wait staff would say "Don't bother Rob, he's talking to Moscow"

Graphite iBook: "Don't bother Rob, he's planning a rave."

Dell: "you look miserable need another beer?"

No pistol looks serious next to a Tangerine iBook. Not even a Tec 9 in a Hello Kitty backpack.

Black = tactical in handguns and laptops. I blame Mission Impossible.

Good guys use Macs. No matter what they shoot. (It's in all the movies)

Neo's life with PC's stunk. He rarely slept, had a boring job. he took the BLUEBERRY pill and all was revealed.

A 1911 is a totally customizable hot-rodder's tinkerers customizers dream: Chrome? yeah! Pipes? Whoa! Flames? Dude!

A Glock is a jeep. Utilitarian, all the same, gets the job done with a minimum of frills.

The mac/pc thing is not much an analogy.
