Please help me decide on a range gun:

I have narrowed my choices down to:

Glock 21 or a Stainless Springfield/Colt entry level 1911

Reasons for Glock:
1. Higher capacity
2. will fit my existing M6 tac light/laser
3. I am a fan of the Glock pistol (I own others)

Reasons for 1911:
1. Pretty!
2. Shouldn't everyone have at least one?

additonal info:
I will NOT carry this gun
The gun may be available for HD, but the shotty will be 1st grab, so that really doesn't matter either.

(btw, I'm gonna post this on GlockTalk as well, but the opinions over there may be a bit biased ;)

Two different animals for two different kinds of people.

Do you want something that will provide a load-it-and-forget-it pistol solution or are you looking for something that might require some more attention, but can ultimately be more rewarding?

The Glock is what it is, the 1911 can be what you want it to be - but you have to be more involved...it is a 100-year-old design after all. :)

For a new shooter, or someone not all that interested in learning about guns in any kind of depth, just looking for a solution to a problem: I'd recommend the 21. For an experienced shooter looking for something they can grow with: I'd recommend the 1911.

Buy the 1911 now, get a Glock after the AWB sunsets and they start coming with full cap mags again. I've got both, they each have their place.

PS: If you have other Glocks and don't have a 1911, there's your answer right there!

My vote is definitely for the 1911. Since you already have multiple glocks, give the 1911's a try. IMO they're more accurate to shoot and they're just beautiful to look at and fondle :uhoh: :p

A little variety never hurt anyone... go for the 1911 and be converted!

:D

Thanks!

I'm leaning HEAVILY away from the darkside now...

and into the stainless, custom wood grips, beautiful light.

keep 'em comin!

You might change your mind on the 1911 at some point and opt for a different gun than the Springfield. I'd get the Glock. For less money, you still get a great gun. I'd prefer an Argentine Sistema myself -- a fantastic gun for considerably less. But this is my opinion, and it's your hands and your wallet. Good luck.

1911's have more strong points than what you listed...

1. Very ergonomic
2. Cheap GI mags
3. Thin grip
4. Good triggers
5. Good accuracy
6. Very customizable

For a range gun, do you really need to mount a light?

Since you already own other Glocks... and no 1911 yet, I voted 1911, currently, I own 3 Government Models and a Para Carry, and only one Glock, a 2nd Gen G22. I wouldn't mind a G26 though...

Glocks are....Glocks. Ugly, easy to maintain, not incredibly accurate, but they function. They go bang each time you squeeze the trigger.

1911s are in a completely different class. They can be plain-vanilla functional to chunky-monkey. They are beautiful and historic.

IMO, magazine capacity is the only practical difference between these pistols, unless you're planning on a beach landing. If I thought the weapon was going to get sandy or muddy, I'd go with the Glock.

As much as I love my 1911A1, my Glock 17 gets the nod for abusive environments.

The G21 is a very fine gun (as is any Glock) but a Kimber is super-sweet. Get the Kimber entry gun with the rail. I too like at least the ability to mount an M6 to my pistols.

After shooting a Stainless Gold Match earlier today, yes, everyone absolutely should have at least one :)

For CCW, I might lean towards the G21, but I'd definitely opt for a 1911 range gun, and I'd try to find a good used STI Trojan, as opposed to the new Springer or Colt.

I voted "neither - see my comment". :D Here is my comment...

Get an H&K USP 45 - prettier than both the Glock and the 1911. IMO More reliable and more accurate than the 1911 and more accurate than the Glock. But if an H&K isn't in your budget then the Glock for sure.

Since you are buying a range gun I suppose dealing with the not so rare jams that occur in anything but a mil-spec 1911 wouldn't be much more than annoying but why be annoyed? The 1911 had it's day and it's day is past (ducks and rolls behind nearest cover while screaming don't shoot - don't shoot). There are better .45ACP pistols out there and two of them are the Glock and the H&K USP (H&K - my preference).

Though I have nothing against Glock (I own one, I owned another which I sold and will more than likely buy two more) I'm a long-time fan of the 1911 platform. If you're wanting a 45ACP for a range gun and you aren't going to be carrying it, I see no reason at all to get the Glock over the 1911.
