I notice that often times on some 1911s the slide tends to overhang the rear of the frame, or vise-versa where the slide sits just forward of the frame leaving the rear of the ejector sticking out slightly.

Is this situation a function of the barrel fit of the gun, or simply a difference in tolerances of the slide/frame? Can a situation like this be corrected, and if so what is the cure?

It can be a barrel fitting thing, or it can be a frame or slide thing that doesn't have the same contour cuts.

The accepted practice is to contour the frame & slide with a file or belt sander to match flush after barrel fitting, and before polishing & bluing.
