This is a tragedy, and the assignment of blame cannot change that. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. May God give them the peace which transcends all understanding.

I have to object seriously to the criticism of law enforcement, legislature, etc., that I have seen in this thread. It suggests a failure to understand the basic nature of law enforcement. Unfortunately, it is this misunderstanding that ultimately led to vulnerable condition of the victims.

The purpose of law enforcement is self-explanatory; the police are not bodyguards. They exist to enforce the law, and by so doing, discourage criminal acts. In this respect, they serve the people - the collective society, not the individual. The individual has always had the responsibility to provide for his or her own safety, and this will neverchange.

When you suggest that the police are the first means of protection for the people of this country, you step off of the Constitution and onto the fringe of Marxism.

There are two parties responsible for these two tragic deaths: the murderer, for choosing to unjustly take two lives, and the two victims, for leaving their safety in the hands of others. The murderer deserves whatever he gets; the victims assuredly did not.

The argument has pretty much run its course, Tuner. Everything has pretty much been argued to death. I'm just a little bored with Mr. Anarchy piping up in every thread suggesting all cops and all government are worthless.

When it comes to the immediate personal defense of individuals, the police ARE largely worthless. Sometimes that's not their fault. Sometimes it is. But regardless of the reason, that's the way things are.

If there's a credible immediate threat to your life and you aren't prepared to defend yourself with lethal force, you're probably going to end up dead.

Look, everyone, Deanimator and I agree about something!
