I'll enter the sporter class, with my 10/22 DSP. I am not a great shot, but this looks like a heck of a lot of fun. Good luck everybody!

It is fun, and that is the purpose of the match...getting better one shot at a time is a bonus. Welcome to THR and the rimfire match, MAINEMAN!

:)

Well, this is how it is for this year.

I did my target today, going for Cataract surgery on the 29th.

Here's all my excuses right up front: :cuss:

Last shot my model 52B Win, with 15X Lyman scope in 1965. :what:

The gun weighs about 40# :uhoh: too heavy now

20 deg F out with ice and snow on the ground. :barf:

Shot 10 rounds offhand. :scrutiny:

Lots of fun though, guess that's what it's about.

JIM:D

ps This display will surely get others to shoot and not be afraid of being last for I surely have that position.

TT, looks like a 15 to me...not b for a rifle that was last shot before I was born (you were joking...right?). I am glad you enjoyed it...and perhaps next month you can whoop up on all of the rest of us after your surgery. Hope everything goes well and Merry Christmas;

Mav. :)

For reference, Here is an exerpt from the official NRA Sporter Air Rifle Position Rule book (smallbore is the same way, I just have Air Rifle handy):

I think it is easier to determine score than arguing about what percentage of a hole is within a scoring ring (for future reference):

"14.3 How To Score - A shot hole, the leaded edge of which comes in contact with the outside of the bullseye or scoring rings of a target, is given the higher value. If a competitor fails to hit any target (shot/s outside the scoring ring) that shot will be scored as a miss (zero). A scoring gauge will be used to determine the value of close shots. The higher value will be allowed in those cases where the flange on the gauge touches the scoring ring, see Figure 7 [omitted....], except that when the Air Rifle 11 "outward" scoring plug gauge is used, the higher value is awarded when the flange fails to touch the outside edge of the next scoring ring out, see Figure 8 [omitted...]."

...then some specifications for scoring gauges for air rifles.

I printed some targets, hope I can get out to play...

Daizee, I agree and we will likely use that scoring method from now on...seems like the match gets more refined, and simpler every month. I appreciate the input and suggestions.

:)

Maverick, I applaud you for running these things. I think they're great, and am sorry I haven't been able to participate yet. Too bad the weekend looks like rain too.
Happy Holidays.

Thank you, Daizee; let me know if you (or anyone else) needs a few extra weeks and we'll make this a month-after New Years match. ;)

Happy Holidays everyone!

Hello, all. I'm new here and this looked like fun. Due to a lack of printer ink, I used different targets, but moved them back to a distance greater than 50 feet. I shot with a Savage Mk. II with a 3-9x scope and put Remington Ammoe through. Rested the front of the rifle on a support. Here are the results.

I'll be out again soon with the proper targets.

Welcome to THR and the Rimfire Match, firefighter. Good shooting, make sure and get some ink and check back in.

:)

Welcome, FyrFytr. I've heard good things about the Savage Mk II. Looking fwd to more targets! P51D

Thanks for the welcome, Maverick and P51. I enjoy the Savage quite a lot. Very well put together, the Accu-Trigger is simply amazing, and the price was right. It was also the first brand new rifle I bought.

I'm not sure if this is my first post here or not (I'll have to look by my name after I hit reply <G>). A friend and I are going to the range today and have been talking about your contest all week. We are horrible at shooting but are looking forward to trying.

What class are we in? Ruger 10/22 with stock internals but with a scope and a bipod.

Edit: Yep, it is my first post. My name is Robert McElwee and I am in Charleston, SC. My friend and I work together and go to an indoor range about 2-3 times a month and shoot 500 rounds through my pawn shop 10/22 and Walther P22. Neither of us shoot very well but really enjoy it.

What class are we in?
Sounds like you are in the Limited Target Class, Magnified Optics Division...however you can drop to the Sporting Class if you don't use the bipod and shoot unsupported.

shoot 500 rounds through my pawn shop
I know the feeling...but just watch out for the employees...they get real aggravated if you hit one. :uhoh: :neener:

Neither of us shoot very well but really enjoy it.
That is what is important...have fun and welcome to [posting on] THR, Robert! :)

Not sure if the pics will come out or not.

The pics are a little hard to see, but I don't believe that you scored them correctly...it looks like you shortchanged yourself on a few of the bulls. As I see it the first is a 78 and the later looks like a 77 to me...good shooting Robert and Geoff.

:)

Larger pics attached (wasn't sure if I would get yelled at for an 850kb jpg). Please take a look at these and tell me which ones are scored incorrectly.

FWIW, when we go to the range and move the target back to 50 feet it swings for 5 minutes. We try to wait for it to stop moving but it gets a little boring just standing there. When we were shooting at these targets they were jumping around (up/down as well as right/left). Nothing like trying to hit a moving target! These were shot with Winchester 333 bulk ammo from Walmart.

Ah, didn't know you could click on the picture a second time to zoom in. Cool....

No problem with the larger photos here...they are much easier to see and score...the "re-revised" scores as I see it are: 74 for yourself in the first one, and 68 for your buddy in the second one. Good shooting, and thanks for getting a friend involved.

:)

Any chance you could point out which targets were graded incorrectly? Just one page would be ok (no need to look at both of them). I just have no idea how to grade it.

On the one for me I have:
3 5 4
4 5
10 10 4
5 4
4 5 5

Sure, the first was: 3+5+5(4)+4+5+10+10+4+5+4+4+5+10(5), with your score in the parenthesis. I simply looked at the center of each shot (majority of the hole) to determine which ring it was in. I may be wrong...we can keep your score if you like.

Well I finally got to get out and shoot a little...and my gun blew apart (but I managed to piece it back together later on). I will not be shooting any more CCI .17M2 in my rifle as I had two (out of 14 fired) to exhibit case head separation, as seen in the photo below, the last one blew the extractor/spring/plunger out of the rifle and blew the magazine apart, effectively ending the shooting (for the 10/17M2)... :banghead:

I did manage to finish up shooting with the Hornady (which did very well), but I began to loose daylight before I could give it another go with one brand of ammo.

The first target was shot with a Stevens Model 87D .22LR 24" bbl, Bushnell 4x Scope, shot prone, using Fed. Bulk...for 52pts; the second was the botched target shot with my 10/17M2 18" bbl, CenterPoint 4-14x Scope, shot at bench with bipod, using CCI and Hornady HM2...for 62pts.

If I have an opportunity I will go out again and use Hornady or Eley for the remainder of targets.

:)

Maverick223 take your finger nail and run it around the neck of the rounds you have left....i bet there cracked... i had 150 rounds of Hornady that was bad lots.....sent them back and they sent me new 1's...call CCI and they'll take them back.....i have found that ELEY's shoot flatter and run the bolt better than CCI or Hornady.....but they smell kind of funny!!!???.....my 10/17 is down right now....over tightened the barrel wage and broke it:cuss::cuss::cuss::banghead::banghead::banghead:

waitin' for new part...

I can make a New Year's +2 target. That is when the club will open for rimfire rifle. Don't do much outside shooting in winter, as I am on blood thinners. Any chance of monthly matches?

Looked at them...some are, and the necks are cracked on some as well (before shooting).

I plan to complain until I get more than replacement ammo...I want a magazine dangumit!

I will give Eley a shot, I have a box sitting in the safe and was planning on using it on one of the targets to see how each brand performed...didn't make it that far. Eley uses a odd formulation of primer that makes their rounds smell kind of foul...but it gives great performance and consistency, just ask any Olympic shooter.

There are a couple people that have expressed interest in shooting, but haven't had the time, what say everyone about extending the match 1 additional month (thus making it a New Years Resolution match)?

Any chance of monthly matches?
Real good chance of monthly matches...we already have them! Welcome to THR and to the Rimfire Match, MR3855! :)
