Welcome to the Centerfire Match for the second quarter of 2014 (April-June)! This match is open to any centerfire rifle. This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 100yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 200yds.

*Please take note that the distance has been revised to reflect moderate range riflery (to compliment the concurrent long-range rimfire match) for this quarter's match.

There are Two Rifle Classes in the magnified division (only one for the non-magnified division):
->Target Rifles (purpose-built target rifles, modified rifles, rests, heavy rifles (over 10lbs), high magnification optics- over 10x may be used).
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles). Rests/sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class, but shooting sticks (either the crossed or walking stick variety) are allowed. Use of a sling is encouraged. Shoots may be taken from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class.

100 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image attached below*. Scale to "fit to page" on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire three (3) shots at the groundhog target. The target is scored as exactly as marked and requires only cutting the line to be awarded the higher value (note that all hits outside of the black "1-ring" are to be recorded as a -3), for a maximum available score of 60pts.

200 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

*Note that shooting at a distance shorter than prescribed is possible for those that do not have access to a facility with enough range. Just scale the target properly (half the distance would equal a 50% target, or four per page) and indicate the distance that you shot at and you will not be disqualified.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo (or load, if you care to divulge your secret recipe), Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before June 31st. ;)

Going to try it with my VZ58 in the next few days, with the irons. I guess I'll try one time w/o sandbags at 100 yards and one with sandbags at 200 yards.

Sorry I didn't get to shoot last quarter's match Mav, and this one leaves me out as well. The 200 yard range for optics leaves me with no place to shoot. No outdoor ranges over 100 yards within 100 miles of me and the indoor range I usually shoot at is only 100 yards. My centerfire rifle is scoped and in the target class.

Good luck everyone.

Jim

Welcome, alfon99!

KSCCHTrainer, before you run off, you can rescale (in your case to 50%...or four per page) the target to reflect the change in distance and shoot at the maximum range available...just indicate that you didn't shoot at the prescribed distance when you submit (you will not be excluded from the leaderboard for shooting at a closer range). I apologize for not initially adding this to the OP (like I did in the RF Match).

:)

Thanks for the clarification Mav, we're going to be doing a bit of travelling over the next week or so and it will probably be middle of April before I get a chance to make it to the range for the first time this quarter, but I'm doing some more .223 load development so will need to proof it anyway - I'll try and take some match targets along for an attempt when I do that.

Oh and 50%? That would be approximately 2 per page at the present size of your image, which is it?

No problem. I apologize for not adding it to begin with.

I know it's confusing (which is why I wanted to explain that), but it's 50% or 1:2 scale which means it is 50% in all dimensions (height, width and, when applicable, depth), not area. Thus it comes out to four per page rather than 2/page. Think about how perspective works: when you double the distance your view of the target changes to half the original height. I should probably make the same clarification on the RF match, just to be sure everyone understands what I mean.

:)

I just printed off ten of these unfortunate critters. I may try my hand at the rimfire side as well with some open sights since my target rifle is out of commission right now. The longer range sounds like fun.

I may need to print off a few more...

Gregaw, I'm glad you like it! There have been a lot of requests for a long range match in the RF match threads and now that it has started to warm up I figured this was the time to give it a try. If all goes well we might even step it on out to 300 next year.

You probably didn't notice that the CF and RF versions are different, but just in case you did...don't worry about it, the only difference is a "CF Version" tag placed at the bottom so the forum doesn't kick out the duplicate attachment. In other words use either for both if you'd like (though the RF version is ever so slightly smaller and consumes an almost imperceptible lesser amount of ink)...or even modify the target to better suit your needs (e.g.: add color to make the target more distinguishable at distance or change the gradient to a light charcoal to reduce ink consumption).

:)

I managed to get 4 of these on one page - as close to proper scaling for use at 100 yards for those of us with distance challenged shooting ranges.

If someone could check and make sure they are pretty much correct and convert 'em to a PDF file, that would be great.

Jim -

I PDF'ed that image and tested a print of it. It looks good to me. See what you think.

Thank you, Gregaw! Well...I just finished re-installing Acrobat Pro on my laptop and creating a PDF from the image (if you have problems with the image he attached let me know and I'll add mine, though I doubt it's any different), but it seems that I came a little late.

Edited to add: I came across this free (for 3 days) PDF editing software if you want to take advantage of it. I haven't any experience with it (I use Acrobat Pro which works great, but it is costly), however the reviews that I saw were favorable so it might be worth a shot.

Would a Ruger No.3 in .44 mag be eligible? I didn't see any rules regarding specific cartridges or calibers so I figured I'd ask since it is a handgun cartridge.
Thanks!

IMHO centerfire is centerfire, not caliber specific at all.

Mav, is the scaling good enough to be acceptable? I'm still muddling through Corel's Paint Shop Pro when it comes to specific sizing of images.

Jim

Welcome to the match and the forum, Shotgun Sergeon! Any chambering is fine so long as it's a centerfire cartridge (though I might make an exception if someone wanted to use an old large caliber {0.25in.+} rimfire or any pinfire...an event that I don't foresee, despite wishing it would happen). To better answer your query, pistol cartridges are just fine...as is anything from a .14Walker to a 2Bore as long as it's chambered in a rifle, can be shoulder fired (we'll have to create a new thread for cannon matches), has only one projectile, and has a primer this is the right place.

KSCCHTrainer, it looks fine to me.

:)

Thanks!
I'll admit I'm not the greatest shot in the world with iron sights, but I don't suck. And I'm not gonna pass up the chance to enter a competition as it will be the first one I've ever entered XD

Well i guess I'll get things started.

Here's my two attempts with my 16" Bushmaster w/1-4 Millett and 53 gr Vmax over CFE223.

And my Kimber 22-250. Had a brain fart between groups, if I had moved the scope the correct number of clicks I would have had a much better score(moved for 100 yards not 200) but i ran out of ammo to shoot again. Both groups were 15 pts.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Texas4x4hoe! I think you mis-scored the first two though (and not in your favor)...looks like a 21 & 26 respectively to me (you only need to break the line to attain the higher value for record).

:)

Ok cool. I missed that. I was going by the scoring rules on the target. Got to get some more 22-250 loaded up and try for the eyeball shots:D

I had a chance to try this today with my iron-sighted AR15. The rifle's got a heavy barrel, and I shot using a front rest, so, if I understand the rules, I'm in the Target/100 yd division.

Anyhow, I nailed the body for a 45, then thought I might be able to pull off the head shot trifecta. Close, but no cigar, with a 40.

I had a few minutes right at sundown to run to the range tonight. This time of year the sun sets right behind the 200 yard berm so I had to wait a few minutes and "play" with a handgun until it was hidden.

I shot 3 targets at ~215 yards (see how I handicapped myself there). :) That 's just where the berm sits so that's what I normally shoot. It was the first time I've been able to shoot this gun with less than a 10mph wind. It was blowing in from the right at about 5mph but calmed down to about nothing as I was finishing up.

pdogs200yd-5-14_zps627a4858.jpg

I thought was in the bottom of the eye ring in the left target. My third target drifted farther down and right.

They should score 30 and 45. I'll be back another day to try for the 60!

I'm shooting my new AR15 with a 20" varmint barrel. 69gn Nosler handloaded .223. It has a Mueller 8-32x44 Target scope. I'm excited to give this rifle a good workout this summer. I may have just found a place to shoot 600 yards some. I'm hoping to try it out there sometime soon.

Happy Shooting!

Good shooting, Gregaw! Don't know if I've mentioned this here in the CF match, but feel free to fill the ring(s) with color (with photoshop, et cetera, or a crayola...whatever works as long as you can still make out the ring is fine by me) if that will aid you in finding the right sight picture.

:)

Tried a second target for the '60' score but no luck on that one. Looking forward to the 3rd quarter target.
