Yesterday, I made the mistake of looking over the used gun rack at my favorite indoor range in Wichita! There, just waiting to be grabbed up was a used Remington model 7615P Police patrol rifle. It's a Pump .223 carbine with a 16.5" barrel that is modeled on the 7600 action but has an insert that uses AR-15 magazines (the metal type, it don't like the polymer ones). It's drilled and tapped for a scope, but the normal iron sights consist of a wide front post with a very prominent white dot and the the rear is a Wilson Combat ghost ring peep sight. Normally they come with one 10 round magazine, but this one had a 20 round AR-15 mag in the box instead. Not having the money at the time, but hoping it would stick around, I immediately advertised my little Citadel 1911A1 compact .45 (Officer's model) on the local CCW forum for $450. It wasn't 20 minutes later and I had an "I'll take it" and the gentleman offered to meet me right away. I took the money back to the range and that 7615 followed me home last night!
The barrel is stamped 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington Caliber so I don't even have to worry about which type of ammo to use in it.
Took it to the range this morning (didn't have any White Feather targets with me) and with irons and my eyes I only shot it at 25 yards where I could still see the front sight and the target. It has a 1:9 twist barrel so I tried it with 55 grain FMJ surplus, (OK) 62 FMJ handloads (better), 75 grain match handloads (back to OK), 69 grain match handloads (good) and finally some of the 62 grain BTHP FBI surplus Winchester Match ammo that Midway had on sale a while back (BINGO!) It absolutely loves that surplus FBI stuff and I found out Midway has more of it in stock and still on sale at $10.99 a box of 20. Wonder of wonders, wifey told me to order 1000 rounds of it while it was still available! Don't even ask me how fast I got that order placed with Midway -
I've wanted a .223 carbine for quite a while, but I don't like the AR platforms as I reload and hate coming home from the range with less brass that I went there with in the first place. At least this pump lets me bring it all home and has the capability of using 30 round magazines when necessary.
May shoot it with irons or unmagnified optics in next months centerfire match.
The target is the 25 yard group I shot with the Winchester 62 grain match ammo.
EDIT: Just got the Tasco Red-Dot scope mounted so here's another picture of it.
