Here we go, after hunting a week and a half straight and seeing next to nothing in stands and "ambush" hunting, my father and I decided to jump some pond dams for ducks or geese. After about a half mile walk to this pond in the flint hills of Kansas we spotted some deer on an adjacent hill. In typical fashion neither of us had a rifle in hand so after sprinting back to the truck to find I had left my rifle at the house, I grabbed my fathers M77 25-06 w/ 120 gr core lokts and set a new weighted flint hills 800M record. Fortunately I had sighted his rifle in last season and i was able to sneak up the dam of this pond for a prone shot across the little valley. Measured on google earth to a 360 yard shot, second longest I've taken but felt good and worked out quite well.

Three years without taking a deer. Not my biggest rack or heaviest deer I have taken but still a nice 7 point buck and 161lbs live weight. 60 yard shot, head on, down into the base of the neck into the body through the spine with the R-30 in 30 Remington AR pushing a 150 gr Core-lokt at 2400 fps. He never moved, pilled up in his tracks. Found most of the bullet's lead core in his stomach, no jacket found yet, maybe when we butcher.

The scrape bin rifle kills more than armadillos.

Here's another one of those no luck photos with snow. This one's from last Tuesday, Dec. 27th in the Bristol hills in the Finger Lakes region. Watched a monster 8 point for 10 minutes as he was casually feeding and oblivious to me about 50-60 yards away. Too far for my crossbow and all I could see was his head/neck area so I sat there watching him chewing on something. Waited for him to drift over closer to me but he walked off away from my spot. This all happened from about 2:30 to 2:40 P.M.. About 3:45 I realized he had vacated the area and took a pic of where he was. Circled the spot after downloading it onto the computer, at least I have that picture in my memory with that buck standing there. It was 19 deg. F with no wind, and I was well bundled up so my only complaint was about how that buck wandered off in the wrong direction in the winter wonderland. IMG_4917.JPG .. Late muzzle loader & crossbow ends Sun. Jan. 1st. Might be out there New Years day for one last shot at it. At least I managed to get a decent doe out of those woods with the crossbow back on Nov. 9th.

Hunting season is just about done for me here. I'm out with the in-line this weekend for our muzzleloader season trying to cross paths with one of these two.
Or rather I should say I'm trying get a shot at them since I've seen the first one 3x and the second one once since mid-November without being able to get a shot.

Well I didn't get a chance at the two above but I did manage to fill the tag.

This buck and a doe came down the road off the hill shown in the second picture and started nibbling around right at the base of the hill.
They both provided me with good shots but I took the buck as he was a bit larger.
Thompson Center Omega Z5, Two pellets of Triple 7, Hornady SST 250 grain @ 65-70 paces
He ran about 25 - 30yrds to the left and crashed right next to driving path, which made for an easy pickup.

If I want I still have two weeks of Archery to go after the other two with my crossbow.

Hunting season ended for me today, (Jan 1st), the last day of late crossbow & muzzleloader, Was up in the hills again at my buddies place and sat within 50 yards of where I was last Tuesday in all the snow shown in my previous post ( #185), and it sure is different since all the snow melted. Was about 40 deg. all afternoon. Saw nothing but my buddies brother had 4 doe drift slowly down the hill toward him but never got within crossbow range and eventually moved off. So that's it for this season. Today's woods view, ( too bad there's no deer pictures):...... IMG_4993.JPG .. IMG_4997.JPG .. IMG_5000.JPG .. Beginning to think seriously about a quality muzzleloader for next fall, I'm too accustomed to rifle hunting up there and during muzzleloader / crossbow season it would be so nice to have just a little more "reach" than what a crossbow offers, even though I love crossbow hunting.

I have a recommendation if you choose to follow thru with that and go with an inline. My Christmas gift I pictured a few posts back was a result of me sighting in one for a friend and commenting to my kids that I was going to have to get one. If you go with an inline , CVA Optima V2 LR is a great option.
