I have been displeased at my Savage's ability to feed ammo . . . it jams on some hollow points. I think the jamming is a result of design not just my particular gun. Since it sounds like you have limited access to ammo over there, I just can't personnally recommend Savage.

DITTO!! I have had mine for about 6 months and have only fired it about 50 times for that very reason.
I would go with a Marlin model 25N, it's a 7 shot bolt action.

I second the pump action remington. I don't know what the model is. But they are good ones.

As i said before i cant have pump actions, marlin 60's or 10/22's or anything semi auto.

The feeding issue seen on the Savage seems to be related to the magazine not being tight in the rifle. I have read over at Rimfire Central that that is fixable.

I assumed pump action 22 rifles were okay in Australia. I did it from memory, hence the 552 vs 572 mis-statement. I have shot the 572, but not a 552. I grew up with a 572. But I don't own either.

Check around. I feel sure you will find what you're looking for.

The lever actions like the Marlin 39A are very good; accurate and dependable. Not cheap however. Winchester made a good lever action 22 and the Browning BL-22 is very good. It is just a bit small for me.

No pump actions?? sheesh! Well, in that case, I second the lever action.

Probably no lever actions either, i think were only aloud bolt, but not sure..

^ to that post, doesn't matter about the neighbors, country= good? :D. im looking for a savage or a CZ still haven't had time to go the gun shop yet.

Here's one bolt action repeater that still cycles shorts, longs, or long rifles:

Marlin 81TS, other variants are 781, 881, and the 981. That long tube will hold almost half a box of shorts.

Yeah, lol it is a shame, now im thinking about a Brno or whatever they are, my friend down the road has 1, shoots really well..

Aaron 12,

I haven't read each entry in your thread but in addition to your countrymen who post here on THR there are several who post on rimfirecentral.com. Great guys!

If you haven't posted there consider it. Those gentlemen should be able to give you a good idea regarding the products available locally and their cost.

While there are restrictions on certain types of firearms you have some ammo options we here in the US do not. Toadloads and perhaps Superquiets are a couple they mention that might be of interest. Were I in your position and assuming lever actions like the 39 were not an option I wouldn't consider anything other than a good quality bolt action. Fewer parts to break and the few that might are ones you can repair if you can get the part. CZ would be the top contender. If they are to be had there you might look for a TOZ 78 bolt action.

Best

Thanks for that, i think lever action are legal here 2 of my friends of em... ill have to ask them

I have to say it's pretty odd that pumps are illegal but levers are legal. I would think the rate of fire and the magazine capacity are comparable. Ssshhh... Don't tell anybody in government!

There are several nice lever .22 rifles: Marlin, Browning, Winchester (discontinued but still available used). They tend to be pricey, though. A more affordable option is the basic model of the Henry lever rifle. Are they available in Australia?

Out of eight different .22s, my absolute favorite is my 1948 BRNO #1 Sporter.

Shown here beneath a Remington model 34.

The 452 FS is a fine rifle. I prefer mine with just the iron sights as well. However, I had fun temporarily mounting a big fixed 36 power target scope on it for accuracy testing recently.

It shot a quarter inch 50 yard group with higher end ammo and performed admirably with dollar a box CCI Blazer.
