22 mag from 6.5 handgun or 22lr from 16 rifle?

Thanks for the info. For about 26$ more than the cost of the Henry + shipping I decided to get a ruger charger. It's roughly 3 inches longer and 1/2 pound lighter and can be stored ready for use. Since I already have a 10 22 rifle I already have a few extra magazines that will work for it. I do like the look of single six and hope to get one one of these days

EXCELLENT decision. Higher capacity, many more aftermarket parts, proven design, & with the 10" barrel, you're getting close to carbine energy from the little 22LR.

+1
and, you can toss in a 25 round mag & have plenty of accessible ammo in your drybag. That is a fine choice for a backpacker/adventure gun.

Years ago I had a Ruger Super Single Six convertible with both .22lr and .22 mag cylinders. Pop cans within 25 yards were in danger . . . even hitting the end of the pop can at that distance was no problem.

One thing, though - the .22 mag out of that revolver had considerably more muzzle blast than a .22lr, especially if the latter were fired out of a rifle.

Shooting it without hearing protection in anything other than an emergency would be a mistake.

In my searching I came across a Henry pump action rifle in 22 mag. It was out of budget and not what I was looking for but I asked about it anyways. I got a shock when the told me they would only sell 100 rounds of 22 mag a day. That's nuts. I really would like a ruger single six one of these days that can wait.

Here a few thoughts I am thinking of. Not sure if they will help or are in any way relevant. :)

1. Assuming a survival pack rifle, you can probably carry more 22 LR ammo in less space than 22 mag.

2. 22 LR will probably take any game you really need to shoot in a survival situation. You won't be shooting bears. I also really doubt you would need the range 22 Mag adds.

3. On the 22 Mag side, 22 Mag Shot Shells have more and bigger shot and could probably take birds at shorter distances.

4. If it doesn't need to fit in a pack, look at just a Marlin Model 60 or some simple 22 LR rifle like that. No reason to get fancy and an average rifle will be more accurate at distance than a great pistol for most people. A tube fed rifle will not have magazines to carry.

5. 22 LR (especially standard velocity and subsonic rounds) will be much quieter out of a rifle. Using subsonic or standard velocity ammo, you might get away without hearing protection in an emergency. A pistol will hurt your ears regardless.

6. CCI makes Quiet-22 which is 22 LR ammo downloaded to 710 FPS. It is very quiet out of a rifle, but likely won't cycle the action on most semi-autos. It is STILL loud out of a pistol.

I made an arm brace for my .22 Ruger and my Colt Woodsman. This is a 2-foor long piece of wood with a Kydex grip that fits the backstrap of the pistol. It isn't a shoulder stock -- it's merely held in place by hand pressure. But it allows very accurate shooting, since the pistol is held at arm's length, but very steady with a two-hand hold.
