I am thinking of picking up a .22 pistol sometime soon. I have a vintage Ruger Single Six .22/.22mag revolver that was my dads, but I am looking to add something new also. I am thinking Ruger Mk3, Walther P22, or possibly the GSG 1911. I have heard "oh, that's a GREAT gun!" about all of them. I am looking for some more in depth reviews.... Discuss.

Oh, yeah, and thanks!

Might think about a Browning Buck Mark, one fine shooting pistol. I got one 10 years ago, dang good shooter. Easy to take apart and clean, never have had it jam, misfeed, totally accurate too. Think about it! Some say pricy, about $250, but worth the money.

Funny you should mention that one, i had an opportunity a while back to buy a Buckmark private party, but for some reason I passed. I think he wanted too much money for what I thought it was worth, and I didn't have the .22 bug as bad back then...

I had a P22 and it was the most unreliable gun I have ever shot. I had more malfunctions with it than I thought were possible. I cannot think of a malfunction I have seen that my P22 didn't have.....To many to list for sure.

I really wanted my wife to like the gun, so before I sold it for $150+ loss I put another $100 or so in it trying to get it to work....No luck. If I ever want a mag feed single shot I might buy another one. I often say it is the only gun I regret selling, I should have destroyed it and saved someone else a headache. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend one. Anything over zinc smelt value is a rip off, IMO.

That said I bought a Buckmark and have been satisfied with it. I will say it does have an occasional FTF but it's not every other round like the P22, more like 1 FTF every 150-200 rounds, I can live with that.

I'll also say My dad has a S&W 22 (22A I think) and it seems to be a good gun. He also has a Ruger 22 that is a fun little plinker, But I would reccomend the Buckmark over them just because I like it better, no real reason.

I haven't dealt with any 1911 22 or conversion at all, but if I were in the market I'd be looking at the new Browning 1911 22.

Just stay away from the P22 and you'll be happy.

I voted other.

My personal preference is the S&W 22A.

You may also want to look at the Brownings that have been mentioned.

I voted for Ruger. I have a Mk.II. The picture is a target that I was able to shoot with it in an indoor Bullseye match the other day. I have shot better with the Ruger but I was happy with this one.
The point: I am not going to shoot this kind of score with most of the .22s that have been mentioned in this thread, nor are you. The Buckmark...maybe. The others...no.

I chose other. Get a Ruger MK II if you can find one, not a III, or a Browning Buckmark. Stay away from the P22 unless you want to curse a lot.

I'm with Pilot - a MarkII Ruger. I've got a MKI and it's dead-nuts reliable, feeding anything I put into it. And there are aftermarket parts that will improve the trigger on the MK series.
I dislike the lawyerized MKIII unless you disable the LCI & magazine safety.
I picked up a used HS Victor, I really enjoy shooting it but it's a bit finnicky on ammo. Now that the magazine is tuned for CCI SV it's a sweet shooter.

Pete,

I'm curious at what range did you shoot at that target? Off hand or from a rest?

You mentioned it was from a Bullseye shoot. Please forgive me if there is a standard in Bullseye (Range, rest, etc) Im not a competion shooter just plinker for fun.

The reason I ask is because I shoot a 22a off hand with a Holo sight at 25-35yrds & consistantly have 10 shot groups that look like yours. From a modified "Indian" sitting postion (Least that's what I call it) I can place all 10 in the Bulls at the same distance 3 out of 5 times. With the same 22a I make beer cans hop around like jumping beans at 50yrds off hand & consistantly hit clays at 100yrds.

I guess my point is just because you can't do these things with your Ruger, doesn't mean I can't with my 22a. "Ruger yes....Buckmark maybe...Others no" it's not really fair to lump them all in there like that. I'd put up my 22a against a Ruger or Buckmark anyday.

Browning Buckmark is my "other" choice. Get the GSG if there is absolutely no other pistol available, cool looking yes, quality firearm no.

Jed,

Do you have a GSG to base the quality? I've been considering the GSG for a while now & my LGS just got some in. The reveiws I've read say they are better then the Puma's & Chippa-whatevers??

What kind of problems are you having? How is the quality bad or poor? Does it function the way it should etc? Thanks for your imput.

I've had this Ruger MK2 for almost 20 years, I bought it used. I have put 1000's of rounds through it with no problems. Not sure what I paid for it way back then.

Not sure what one goes for now either, but IMHO, you can't go wrong with this pistol.

K-Rod: I hear ya.

That was shot at 50 feet. Standing. One hand unsupported.
That is the drill for Bullseye indoor gallery matches. Outdoors, it'd be 50 yards (and a bigger target, though it would look the same at the distance)

Well....I guess that I could do those things with the Ruger. Maybe. I don't normally (I don't mean that in a critical way, I don't plink for the most part.)
Remember.....I am not the best shot in the world, not nearly - maybe not as good as you......that accuracy in a match is not just group size, it is also where the group is. (What target are you using at 25-35 yards? B2, B16, B6?)
I have shot virtually all the guns mentioned - not the GSG - and have found that the Ruger shoots better for me. I have also lent the Ruger to the same fellows from whom I was borrowing one of those other guns and more often than not, they shoot better with the Ruger. They surely don't shoot worse.
The Ruger allows me to shoot better scores than other guns I have tried...except for my High Standard Victor.

PS:
With the same 22a I make beer cans hop around like jumping beans at 50yrds off hand & consistantly hit clays at 100yrds.
Darn good shooting.

Other, I have a buckmark, and though it has had occasional FTF issues, I think they were more ammo related. I have only shot two of the three guns on your list, and while I cant talk badly about the Ruger, I was unimpressed by the Walther.

The P-22 that I have experience with did run well for the most part, but the issues it did have were more frequent than those of the other 22 autos I have tried. The materials and finish were also sub-par, for the money they cost. You would be much better served by a Ruger, or my favorite the buckmark. The 1911 22s are cool too, but if I were going that route, I would probably look into an actual 1911, and buy a quality 22 conversion for it.

I say go Ruger or Browning both are great. Just get whatever feels better in your hand. I like the Ruger the best though.

The options you are interested in demonstrate a price range you wish to stay within.
I would recommend the Browning Buckmark as well.
