When out shooting with a friend, his SAR 3 had a couple of bolt over base malfunctions, with different magazines, all were steel, with two locking dimples on the floor plate (not sure where/who made them). The offending rounds had evidence that the bolt hit the base of the shell OK, but apparently the feed lips were just rough enough to cause the bolt to bounce over the base and wedge over the round. What are the best mags for his 223 AK? Will polishing the underside of the feed lips of the mags cure the problem, or is this common?

Thanks for any info.

SAR-3s were designed to use Weigar mags. If that's what he was using, then switching mags probably won't solve the problem. But if they were Bulgarian, or "waffle" mags, then they may have been the cause.

agree with prev post, also go to robinson arms and check out some new 223 followers, very important, when you look at the back of a loaded mag, you should only see one bullet base, not part of the next one.

How do we identify Weigar magazines?

The ones he has are blued steel, with two locking dimples on the bottom of the floor plate.

He has an orange plastic mag that looks like a 5.46x39 mag, but is marked ".223" or "5.56" on the floor plate. He said he hadn't used that magazine yet.
