I recently ran into a good deal on American Eagle .223 ammo (at of all places gander mnt.) 1k rounds for 349.00, nice ammo box included plus the clerk asked if I wanted to apply for a gander M/C , I answered with "if you'll take 10% off my total ?" to which she answered " I can make that happen". I buy loaded ammo, fire it and harvest the brass for reloading. Hours later I saw that Dunham Sporting goods had American Eagle 5.56x45 for the same sale price 34.99 per 100. My question is (and forgive me, I know it's been asked before) what is the differance between the two ( as it pertains to the brass). Both american eagle.

found the answer to my question from an artical I saved to my favorites from AccurateShooter.com:eek:

Your American Eagle .223 ammo may, or may not have crimped primer pockets.

All 5.56 NATO spec ammo will have crimped primers, or it is not 5.56 NATO spec ammo.

Other then that, there is no differance, as most commercial 5.56 is loaded to about the same performance level as most .223 Rem.

Unless it is thinner and has more case capacity.

I have old LC 68 brass that is lighter then new Rem commercial .223 brass I bought a couple of years ago.

You can go to the bank that 7.62 NATO & 30-06 GI brass will be thicker then commercial cases.
But not with 5.56 & .223.
It is all over the place.

Only way to know for sure is size it, trim it, and weigh it.

Both are American Eagle, black&white 100 count box. The up-side is, I'm sure the .223 won't have crimped primer pockets. I did pick-up the Dillion Sweger and the rcbs Trim-Pro but after trimming and sweging 500 rounds in one sitting, my fingers hurt.
