I would really call H&r first. This should not happen. If the rifle is breaking open when you fire it there is a very serious malfunction happening.

Have you tired to contact them yet?

DId you buy it second hand or from a dealer new?

Do not attempt to shoot it again.

I had a 22-250 do this also with a certain type of ammo.
It also had signs of excessive pressure. I changed the rounds and haven't had a problem since.

Also make sure the lock is clean of excessive oil. I have read about this a few times at some other places.

I work at a warranty center for them and see this from time to time. The locking block/lug needs to be fit for more engagement. Send it in for warranty repair if it is new.

Ya buddy! I had one that did it also and it was a worn hinge pin. This is really dangerous because it allows for excessive head space, not to mention the risk of a high pressure cartridge going through your face.

thanks ill clean it and see if it helps but ive tried a few different cartridges priv partizan 90 gr hollow points rem cor-lokt 100gr and 120 gr corlokt but nothing has helped

Handi Rifle

Send it back to the factory like the guy said before you get hurt. The locking block is not engaging the barrel lug like it should.

found a semicircle shaped piece of metal under the barrel lug that kept it from locking fully anyway put six rounds of priv partizan 90 gr hollow points never broke down once btw 15.99 for priv partizan is really worth it

don't oil the locking latch in the receiver, or the barrel lug. Those two parts keep clean and dry. Also the recoil keeps the barrel locked, it opens after the bullet is long gone

A buddy has one that does this too sometimes. He things he may have gotten it fixed, but it hasn't been shot much since.

I don't think magnificent is the word I'd use to describe any part of these rifles. Pieces of **** is more the phrase I'd use for them.

Minute of milk jug.

Mine shoots much better than than and they do have there place.

I have had 3 or 4 of the handis and never had a problem with them other than the one gun.

I also had problems with TC, ruger, and a Remington. They all have there little snags sometimes.

well at 125 yds 5 shot groups in a milk jug lid isnt all that bad for $250
Or you could have spent $250-300 on a new Stevens 200 or used Savage Model 10, and been shooting sub moa groups with it, and not worry about it kicking open when you shoot it, or the shell sticking in the chamber and you having to pry it out or knock it out with a cleaning rod which is very common with these.

I have one in .45-70. Excellent rifle! Suspect the issues with spent cartridges is more frequent with non-rimmed than rimmed. Next barrel will be .30-30. :)

I have over a half dozen of them & have not had any trouble what so ever, & they all shoot great !
