30-06 question

I know this is a .30-06 thread, but I hunted last week using the 180g Nosler BT for the first time (first time hunting with any reloads) and laid a buck down with a quartering shot at 150 yards just behind the shoulder exiting middle of the back. Very pleased with this 1 of 1 data set, lol.

The reason I asked about the Hornady SSTs was I carried my dad's sprterized 03A3 as a back up with 150g SST loads. I had several opportunities to take bucks or does with it but I let them walk. Was on the hunt for the monster I saw but he never gave me the chance.

I'm here in Utah, and primarily use a 30-06. I have been thrilled with the performance of the 165 grain Sierra Gameking. It will give a very quick and humane kill on Mule deer, and is enough for Elk or pretty much any game you will find in the Mountain West. Very nice bullet!

I still hunt with my original savage 30-06 rifle I bought more than 32 years ago.
I used to use 125 gr Remington cor -lokt until I killed my biggest 12 pointer ever. I found the small round to be to devastating. It destroyed to much meat. I find the 150 gr to be good for all size of deer. I also will carry an extra mags with 165 gr in case I have to make a longer shot between 400 to 600 yds since at 400 yds the energy is still around 1300 lbs.

For elk I start with 165 grain to 200 yds and 180 gr from300 to 400 yds.
Just find the load his rifle likes.
