Quick question. I have always used flat tip ammo in my Winchester 94. Is the bullet below safe to load in that gun? The tip seems almost flat.

Heck yes that bullet is safe. Just don't use sharp pointed bullets other then Leverevolution.

That Remington is a pretty good bullet by the way.

YES!
It's been around for at least 40+ years that I know of. I first used it in 1972 when I was 16. I'm now 56 and have several hundred of the component bullets available for loading for my .30/30's.
FYI, the lead in the nose is quite soft and will deform readily.

Also, it is an near explosive bullet for use on smaller deer. For deer that typically run over 200lbs, I suggest you move up to the 170gr Corlokt. It too readily expands on smaller deer, but I've never recovered one on over 40 deer shot with them. They both have an excellent reputation in the North end of Maine where deer run over 200lbs and bears are even more numerous and run over 400lbs....

Unfortunately, the component bullets have become much more expensive since Cerebus took over Remington. They are now more expensive than Sierra or Speer and nearly as expensive as Nosler ballistic tips. I'll not be purchasing any more.....

Since that's about the only ammo I see on the shelves these days I need a semi automatic sporting rifle that will run it.

Actually I kinda dig my old Ted Williams lever anyhow.

.

If you can find a .30-30 load on the shelf at your local sporting goods store or Walmart, it's safe to load in a lever gun. Since the overwhelming majority of .30-30 rifles are lever guns, ammo manufaturers wouldn't be selling it if it weren't safe. If you reload, that's when you need to be careful about primers and bullet shapes.

It's a good one but I find that my 1965 Winchester 94 likes the Remington Core-Lokt 170 gr. HP best. Just wish they sold that bullet for reloading...

You sure are behind the times as far as 30-30 ammo goes. Hornady Lever Evolution,
pointy tip and all is a great ,new up-date in 30-30 ammo. Try it .

My Marlin .30-30 likes the "core-Lokt" 170-gr the best.

Load up and blaze away. The ONLY pointy stuff to use is the Hornaday Leverevolution with the polymer tip.

Why don't you want to use pointy stuff in lever actions?

Lever guns use tubular magazines. So, the pointy tip of one round contacts the primer of the round in front of it in the magazine. Too much jostling could result in an unwanted ka-boom.

These are fantastic bullets. Use them with confidence. My 30-30 shoots the 170 grain the best...for whatever reason.

Just for the record, not all lever guns use tubular magazines. Savage 99, Winchester 88, Browning lever come to mind. But yeah, no pointy bullets in tube mags.
