I need a good recipe for .30 carbine i am using IMR 4227 power with a 308 115 gr cast what is the min-max of the load i was thinking about 13.5 gr with IMR 4227 if u know something to help it would be most help full i am new to reload the .30 carbine would it be better to use a different power i have IMR 4895 and some Herc 2400 so thanks again [email protected]

Ditto on the 2400..............used the stuff for over forty years in my M/2.

Years back I used to push Lyman's 311359 gc with then published max. loadings...........I long since dropped back to the 12 gr. level with absolute success and good accuracy.

I use Alox lube by the way and have never had the least problem with leading.

I had saved this quote off of castboolits

"I've used the Lee bullet that is identical to the 311316 and did have problems with jams until I sized it down to 308. I also found that polishing the nose with some steel wool to remove the sharp edge of the front driving band mad it feed very well. I got some of my best groups with it (3 shots in 3/8"@25yds) with 12gr herc2400.

Have had great luck with H4227 and BlueDot.

I use the 100 grain Lee #311-100-2R with no problem. I load with 14 grains of IMR 4227. Works for me."

I copied this information out of a sierra manual one day at a library:

113 grn lead

Powder Start GRN (max) Velocity pressure

unique 5.5 (6.5) 1386(1555) 27600(38600)
SR-7(6?)25 4.6 (5.6) 1194(1368) 22800(39900)
SR-4756 5.5 (6.5) 1256(1453) 23400(34100)
2400 11 (12.5*) 1033(1500) 31500(40000)
IMR-4227 11.5(13.3*) 1457(1733) 27000(39000)

**********************************************************

the thing to watch for when reloading with lead for the 30 carb is that to get the pressures high enough to cycle the action with a lightweight bullet you run into issues with leading. I run a 120 grn bullet myself.

I don't trust my Iver Johnson M-1 carbine--I use 12,5 gr. H110 for 110gr. bullet
In my Ruger Blackhawk I use 14.5 gr H110 for 110 gr bullet-what a noise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

H110 was originally developed for the 30 Carbine and IMO still the best choice for loading it. Like said above, use a 110gr bullet and H110/W296 and you're good to go!
