.38 Diamond Back $1400???

will be looking for a .22 Python Trooper then!

I think I’ll start watching walking dead! wee whAts whats all the Python Hype about
Never watched Walkin Dead, eh? The first 7-8 seasons were pretty good, then it got kinda lame- hasn't stopped them from making a half- dozen spin-offs though. Fear the Walking Dead is decent too.

Rick, the main character, is a Georgia Sherriff who carries a stainless duty Python when the zombie-apocalypse happens. It features prominently in the series, eventually passing to his daughter. Strangely, they substituted a rather obvious fake prop for the real thing in the last season or two- I suspect as a result of the Alec Baldwin/ Rust fiasco. 🤔

If you don’t want to watch the series there is always the Internet Movie Firearms Data Base.
Here’s a link for season 1.

I enjoyed the show up to when they encountered the psycho with the barbed wire wrapped ball bat. The final episode I watched was when Rick had the psycho in his sights but lets the psycho get away due to really lame writing, directing, acting, whatever. I quit watching at that point.
There’s only so much a guy can take

A Diamondback is one of those guns I always wanted but never got. I just couldn't bring myself to for some reason. I suppose I was just too cheap. I suspect, like a Python, they really aren't any better than any other gun in their class, they just look cooler. But man, do they look COOL.

I did had a little Rossi 38 for a while that looked just like the Colt DB. It could have fooled most people unless they were close enough to read the rollmarks. Shot great too. I shudda kept that one, but NOooooooooo....I knew better.

I think I watched about ten seasons of the Walking Dead. It was pretty good, especially the first years. I don't know if I just got bored with it, or if it really got boring, but I stopped watching it somewhere along the way.

I've owned this Diamondback .22 for almost 40 years. It was originally a 6" blued model I bought used as a kid in the mid-80's with my Dad's help. He shot a S&W 17-2 at informal silhouette tournaments in his Sportsmans Club at work, and I was his sidekick. I loved the look of the Colt and I saved money from birthdays, chores, mowing lawns in the neighborhood, etc, for 2 years. I found a classified ad in the newspaper and if my memory is correct, it was $235. Dad & I went to the man's house and came away with the gun & box. I shot it a lot for nearly 20 years.

I had a 4" barrel mounted on it by a gunsmith, but the finish was more worn than the rest of the gun. I had a brushed, hard chrome Metalife finish applied. I swap barrels from time to time. I mounted a Millett rear sight last year and modified a Python front sight blade to fit. The original wood grips were reshaped decades ago, but reside in the closet, along with 2 sets of Herrett grips. These Pachmyars feel best.

In my opinion, it's a beautiful gun with tasteful modifications which make it more shootable and special. My daughter says it's hers after I'm gone....

Regarding "The Walking Dead" I only watched one season. Being
filmed in the Atlanta area I knew one of the zombies and I wanted
to see him stagger along. His day job was working in a gun store.

As for a Diamondback, I had a 6-incher decades ago. Couldn't
shoot it worth a hoot but it was a very attractive gun. The S&W
Model 14, slightly bigger, was more to my liking.

I have read that Colt made, IIRC, one (1) Python in 22 LR. It was for a retiring company official as a lovely parting gift.

I had a Colt Official Police, 4" in 22 LR at one point. I forget how old it was, or how it shot even, but I know I did shoot it. I kept it for a while then sold it to a "Colt Guy" who wanted it more than I did.

don’t it look just like a Baby Python!!!

my Honey Hole shop has a .22 DB 4” with lots of holster wear… $2200! no joke

I don't doubt that at all.
Nice score!!
I have a 4" 22 and 4" 38. Also the correct factory stocks for both. I bought the 22 used in about '93 for $150. The .38 I bought in about 2010 for $400 to match the .22. :D

I didn't realize they changed to rubber grips. The one I bought for my son was sometime in the mid to late '70's. It came with the checkered walnut grips with Colt medallions and I didn't keep up with any changes. I have had a S&W model 19 and a Python at the same time. I decided I did not need two D/A revolvers in 357 magnum The 19 won out. The trigger were the same, Python won in looks, but I shot the Smith better so the Python went down the road and I still have the Smith. I have a Rossi Plinker and I would swear they copied the Python look. They did a pretty good job too. Great trigger, both double and single action. Nice shiny and deep bluing but they skimped on the grips that I never liked. I cured that with set that fits one of their center-fire guns that uses the same frame.

The last gunshow I attended well over a year ago was covered up with revolvers, a rarity for this area, Many CZ new made Pythons and plenty of used makes. One vendor had an older Python that was in a locked display case. It had quite a bit of holster wear and was priced at only $3400.

Fun fact, the barrels were made from Python stock, only the stamping is didifferent.
Do you have a source? That doesn't sound right to me, being two different frame sizes and presumably forcing cone, barrel shank, and thread sizes as well.

Or do you mean the barrels were all cut from the same bored and rifled bar stock?
It's my understanding that the Python has gain twist rifling. That means the barrels have to be rifled individually if my thinking is correct,

Any way you cut it I can't see the stamping being the only difference

When I was first buying equipment for my LE position in 1969, we had to buy our own stuff, then got an “equipment allowance” once a year.

I really wanted a Diamondback, we were restricted to .38Spl., but the price differential between that and a S&W Model 10 was so great, it didn’t happen.

As it was, I was very happy with the S&W.

OP, once again, good luck with your new gun!

they made you buy your own gear! wow how times have changed

I’m waiting for my tatic-cool shop to get another snake gun. They sell them cheap and the condition is EXTRA!

I’m a sucker for Model 10’s, and Colt Police style. Elegant is the word! now I need to find some soft vintage holsters!

Yes, and that included uniforms, they issued nothing.

The NYPD had an equipment bureau where their members could buy all they needed at a discount, but my NYS agency did not.

So it was buy everything, then wait to get the allowance, which did not cover the initial cost of everything.

But you owned the firearm.

I hope they paid you good! WOW

PD’s have tanks now

As a lineman I furnished all my climbing gear. 16' linemen's boots, hooks, climbing belt and gut strap, safety strap. clothing, gloves, and tools. The company issued us a hard hat and took the cost out of our first check. The rest was on me and they didn't pay all that great. The only thing we were issued at no cost was rubber gloves and leather glove protectors and they wouldn't replace the protectors until they were falling apart. I was using a pair with holes in them for climbing gloves and received a chewing out from the line suprentedent for having them on although they were worthless for wearing over my rubber gloves for hot work.

If you worked for some one years ago that furnished anything or gave you an allowance consider yourself lucky.

Mark.... That Diamondback I posted is in good/great shape now and was just about 'new' when I bought it....just a little holster wear (all of my doing), near the muzzle. I've tried it with most of the .22's I've had in my locker over the years: CCI Mini Mags, CCI meat getters, CCI standard and subsonic, Federal Match and Auto-Mag, Aguila ?, Remington Golden Solids and HP's & some Winchesters too...Probably some I've forgotten....but it's a 3" grouper at 25 yds from a rest.

The main gripe for me is the stacking DA trigger...the SA is ok ~5 lbs or so but with a good let-off. I carried it afield for better than a decade and really liked the look of it but just couldn't get it to shoot as well as any of my others: a trio of Ruger Single Sixes, Rugers Standard Auto, nor any of the uppers I have for my 1911's and a Sig P226.

Didn't mean to throw a wet blanket on what you've got there as it appears to be a top drawer example....but in my experience, the S&W M18 is a far better revolver from a using standpoint....the one in the pic will hold with my Smith M-41 for accuracy in fact and with most any ammo too.

Congrats on a good find and good luck with it.....all .22 pistolas and rifles too, have their favorite loads and finding them is half the fun. You'll enjoy it I know...Best regards, Rod.

Read it somewhere....lemme go through my library and see if I can find the reference.

ColtFever.Com states that they were made on Python machinery, but doesn't elaborate beyond that.

From my research, the Python didn't have gain-twist, but they did have fast 1:14 rifling and were tungsten ball-burnished for an incredibly tough, smooth and consistent bore. Its likely Colt skipped the final burnishing on the Diamondback barrels at least.

Some days, I almost like my Diamondback more than my minty Model 15. I scored this puppy used one day, just wandered into my LGS, no box, no wear or tear or scratches for $800 during the pandemic. I was the first guy to look at it, thought they'd made a mistake on the tag, sprained my shoulder getting my wallet out so fast... Seems the prices have escalated in Greater Pugetropolis...
