"A large bull moose spent more than an hour stomping on the sled dog team of a rookie Iditarod musher in the wilds of Alaska last week — and the attack didn’t end even after Bridgett Watkins emptied her gun into the animal.

She said on Facebook Friday that the moose, after seriously injuring four of her dogs, wouldn’t leave and that the ordeal stopped only after she called friends for help and one showed up with a high powered rifle and killed the moose with one shot.

She said no musher would ever travel with a rifle or a large caliber gun, instead preferring to scare off animals with a flare gun. And with all the jostling of the sled, the larger guns could easily go off.

She did carry a .380 caliber gun because there are few people where she trains, and she keeps it to to deter or scare off animals. She has since upgraded to a larger caliber firearm after it didn’t stop the moose."

She was probably carrying what she had. Maybe the 380 was more of a defensive CCW. Sounds like she and the dogs put up a good fight. Might have even been better with a flare gun.

She had a .380 pistol. As far as I'm concerned, that's going unarmed any place where the dangerous wildlife outweighs the average person.

Unfortunately, this seems to be another classic case of firearms ignorance, mixed with the magical talisman effect. I feel bad for the dogs. If you've got money for a dog sled team, you've got money enough for an appropriate gun and the ammo to practice with it. And as far as I'm concerned, you also have a responsibility for the safety and well being of those animals. I wonder what she'd have done if a wolf pack had shown up, with her dogs all tied together and to the sled?

HaHa....Somebody probably told her you can kill a grizzly with a 22. I would prefer a pot of boiling water over a 380acp. Probably a pocket 380.....LCP or something. 380acp is a good way to piss off a monster moose though. "Emptied the gun into the Animal" I will take it that she actually made hits. Hopefully it was at least a Beretta 84. Kind of feel sorry for the Moose. Thats a pretty inhumane way to go. Probably a good long bit of suffering waiting for Wonder Woman to call and have the Superfriends show up. If I was that guy I would have handed her my rifle and made her finish the job. Suck it up buttercup!

Quite the rationalization for not carrying a proper gun.

Bella Twin she's not.

Better believe I would have that Moose in my freezer after going through all that. Any excess would be turned into dog food. Maybe she is vegetarian.
The woman is a victim of her own ignorance. Moose suffering and torn up dogs are just collateral damage.

Wait she didn’t have bear spray? That could have made the moose think about running away. Probably more effective then a .380. But what do I know I live in Ga. Biggest threat around here is 300+ pound crack heads. Or general drug addicts.

Perhaps that's how some of the dogs were injured.

Maybe the dogs were helping the poor Moose. Perhaps she was attempting to be one with nature and tried to give the beast a hug or feed it a carrot. The surviving canines may be planning a mutiny right now. She probably feeds them veggies all day.

"emptied the gun into the Moose".... I "think" I know what that means. I could be wrong though.

The whole situation happened because moose hate wolves. The moose thought the dogs were their enemy. Wrong place at the wrong time.

I wonder if the moose got hit, and how many times. Kinda also wonder how the animal is doing, if struck.

It is probably very sick, if not dead.

The lady is lucky Moose don't eat dogs or mushers!

Imagine if she had run into a woolly mammoth!

I have my doubts that she even hit the moose. I saw the facebook post and the attached pics of the moose standing over the pile of sled dogs and didn't see any blood on the moose whatsoever.

While I don't think for a minute that a .380 would stop a charging moose, I do think that you could kill a moose in less than an hour with one if used properly. I also don't understand going out with only the ammo in the gun. I will happily give her a pass for missing the moose while it was charging but when it came to the stand off portion while she watched it stomp her dogs for an hour I'd think there would have been an opportunity to reload and try some aimed fire.

I am for the moose. I doubt she hit the poor thing and if she did it just bounced off. Jostling, whatever-------. It might have been one of those guns like Alec Baldwin uses to shoot movie producers that go off without a trigger being pulled that might jostle. People believe what they hear because they are frankly too stupid or lazy to investigate for the truth so just accept falsehoods because that is easy. Like masks. She probably had on one. 3C
