What do you guys think of Miwall's .44 mag 240gr SWC at 950fps? Would this be a pleasant target shooting load? Would it leave a lot of lead in the barrel? Would it be worth it to just find a FMJ load?

I will have my first introduction to the .44 mag very soon.

Thanks,
Jason

When I first started shooting I shot lead because it was cheap. I gave it up because I don't need the lead exposure and it does crud up a barrel pretty fast. Also, the lubricant most of them put on lead reloads makes a huge cloud of nasty smoke. I only shot one case of lead then strictly FMJ after that.

At this low(er) velocity, barrel leading should not be a problem. Lead-bullet loads are a little "dirtier" to shoot due to vaporized bullet lube and other particles, but gun cleaning is easy. I have shot up a fair amount of Mi-Wall's reloaded and new (assembled by them from other makers' components) ammo and have never had a problem with it.

I'd recommend the .44 Special for targets/plinking

I shoot a LOT of Miwall. I have about 1000 rounds in .357, .41 & .44 in the locker right now.

In fact I shot 198 rounds of it through my 3" 29-3 this past Monday.
3 boxes of .44 Special 240 L-SWC and 1 box of .44 Magnum 240 L-SWC.
It's stashed right next to my computer desk right now loaded with Miwall .44 special 240gr JHP.

I think it's some of the cleanest ammo out there and at less than $10 for a box of .44 Special it can't be beat.

All of this is new ammo loaded in virgin Winchester brass. And I paid between $9.95 and $12.95 a box of 50.

No problems. At the velocities in my gun (4" 629), leading was not happening. The downside is the velocities quoted are from longer barreled guns; I chronographed 836 fps for the 240 gr lswc 44 mag, and 995 fps for 240 gr fmj. The 44 special 240 gr HP was only 684 fps.

I could shoot lots of the "magnum" lswc with no ill effects, physically. After shooting a box of the fmj I realized I needed different grips because the web of my hand was bleeding; the grips did not fit the gun and some frame was exposed. Ooops.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try some Miwall now and think about reloading in the future. According to their schedule Miwall should be at a gun show near me really soon.

I really appreciated the info,

Jason
