44 Special ccw velocity?

Absolutely right. The masses will believe almost anything you want to sell to them. I learned a long time ago that wide heavy bullets at 900 fps. will do just about anything a bullet needs to do. Shoot some bowling pins or heavy steel poppers and watch'em get slammed down with the big bores. A S&W 625 or a 624 are easy to shoot heavy bullets from and more accurate than most shooters.

Skeeter would role in his grave I believe
Skeeter ain't rolling in his grave. There are more good .44Spl's available now than at any other time in history. There's no shortage of good older S&W's in that chambering either. It's one of my favorite cartridges. Currently have five and miss the one I sold. I've just never chronographed a self defense load so had nothing to offer.

Experience has shown me, with "proper" bullets, as velocity go up things die faster!

Yeaaa, slow/big bullets kill, but adding velocity kills things MUCH faster! (non CNS hits)

BTW, I experienced 44spl. loads bouncing off an old dry hardwood board that was on a skid at 50 meters, my 4" 357mag. zipped right on through, as did 44 bullets that were sped up!

I often pack a Charter Bulldog in .44 Special,,,

Wow!!!!!!!!!!
A 140 views. And 2 comments. Must not be to many 44 Special shooters out there.

I just don't have a chronograph with which to measure the velocity.

What load are you shooting? I've recently done quite a bit of chrono-ing of my old Charter Bulldog and might could help you extrapolate your velocities, or at least get close.

Yeah, if the jacketed bullet does exactly what it's supposed to. Cast bullets at moderate velocity work more consistently and seldom fail. More velocity is not always a good thing.

I like shooting the 44 special from my Taurus 44mag. I load plated 240 grain flat points to about 875-900 fps and they are plenty accurate and hard-hitting for me to be confident in them. Pretty sure they will do what I send them to do, if needed.

Hello 35Whelan,,,

This is what I currently have,,,
Ammo in .44 Special is scarce in my neck of the woods.

Nothing special about this ammo,,,
It was all I could find after I bought this gun.

Thanks for offering to extrapolate,,, ;)

Finding .44 Special anywhere is a tough proposition anywhere.

If you come across Magtech Cowboy Loads don't ignore them, the box says they are cranking out at over 750 FPS. Something I, don't want to be standing in front of.

Yup, them cowboys didn't seem to have any problem killing each other with big slow heavy bullets. Of course ambulances weren't around just yet.

Oops....sorry! I assumed you were shooting handloads. I can't help you out with factory ammo or jacketed bullets as I use neither.

Got a new (to me) mould in yesterday and cast up a bunch of these beauties:

Hope to try them out one evening after work, real soon!

44 special carry load

I carry a S&W M-24 3" RB with my handload of a 200 gr. full wadcutter over a charge of Unique that drives it at 950 fps ( they look just like those in the above post).....I have loaded, shot and carried the 44 spl for decades and go for big fat bullets that will cut a full caliber hole rather than try for expansion with JHP's in the 44 spl. This load is very accurate, manageable in rapid fire DA and those big full caliber 44 cal holes in targets will give you that warm/fuzzy feeling.
( 35 Whelen....nice job on the cast wadcutters - you'll like them)

250-grain lead Keith semi-wad with 2400 through a Ruger 4 5/8-inch Flattop .44 Special at 1060 FPS, but not for concealed carry.
Developed the package for the desert.
Could ride under a coat, I suppose. :)

Denis,

I've fired that load or one very close to it from the Bulldog. It's actually not very pleasant surprisingly enough! :)

Sure leaves a mark on the receiving end though.

You know now that I think back on that load that was with the factory Charter wooden grips of course. Frank Pachmayr wasn't making grips in those days. I bet it wouldn't be nearly so bad with todays rubber grips.

Mmmmm.

I worked it up from a range Taffin suggested, for that gun. Could have gone a little hotter, he said, but if I want much more'n that I've got a Flattop in .44 Mag. :)

I wouldn't use it in a Charter.
In the relatively weighty Ruger, the only discomfort is the cheesegrater grips, which need to be replaced.
Tolerable in this gun & load, but not on the .44 Mag.

Bob,

Some of these guys ought to venture over to the Single Actions forum and drool over more great six-shooters like yours (and Craig C's). I love the old guns, both real and reproductions.
