I own two 44 Specials. Both were new when I bought them. Both are carried in my rotation for ccw. I have a Rossi 720 manf 1993 and a Taurus 431 manf 1994. The Rossi is the fixed sighted 3in hammerless model (covert) I changed the hammerless to a hammer. My 431 is blued 3in model, I changed the wood grips to the now discontinued rubber Uncle Mikes.
My Rossi has such an awesome trigger and hammer. Super smooth. The Taurus is a real joy also. I took them out and shot them today. I have to say, my caliber of choice for ccw is one I totally feel comfortable with. I load my own for targets. And stoke them with Blazer God Dots for ccw. I cannot ask for better. Super reliable, very accurate to 20 yards. Easy to carry and conceal. For what I use them for I know they are keepers. Sure I have autos I carry, and other handguns. But I have to say............. the 44 Special is just that. SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fellow 44ers care to chime in?

I have a S&W 696 and a Taurus 431 2.5" round butt. As a reloader they are cheap to shoot, my bullet weight of choice is either a 180 or 200gr bullet.
The load data I have is for CA Bulldog, which works well at the upper end for my guns.
I like these guns for there point and shoot ability, and with a 200gr bullet moving at 950-1,000 fps I can save my hearing while achieving 357 mag performance.

Another .44 Special aficionado reporting in.

I've got Taurus 431, 441, and a Rossi 720.

Nice guns they are.

The Blazer or Speer 200gr.Gold Dots get the nod with these.

I currently have only one: my Ruger Flattop Blackhawk. Eventually I would like to get something in a DA; possibly a Charter Arms Bulldog for CCW.

When it comes to 44 cal, its a toss up between the Special and the Magnum case. Pictured below are four 44* Specials, which are equally accurate at CCW distances. 44 Magnum cases reloaded to hot 44 Special levels make for low recoil pleasant shooting (out of a 44 Magnum revolver). Shooting hot 44 Specials thru a 44 Special revolver, is tolerable in a Charter Arms, manageable in a S&W Night Guard, and best in the S&W 21-4.

*44 Special revolvers, pictured, from the top: Charter Arms Tiger, Charter Arms On Duty, S&W Night Guard, and S&W 21-4. The S&W Night Guard is the finest 44 Special CQC revolver ever built, pity they are discontinued.

One way to look at it is that the 44 Special is generally similar to 45 ACP, which is not too shabby as a carry caliber. The important thing is enjoy a gun scaled for 44 Special, not 44 Magnum, which is necessarily bigger and heavier.

Did I hear .44 Special mentioned?

Here are mine:

Two Colt New Frontiers, a Ruger Three Screw Blackhawk (ex-.357 Magnum) and a Uberti.

The Ruger is my daily companion in a Graveyard Jack holster.

Bulldog....

I'd buy a CA Bulldog .44spl DA only or the shrouded version. Id get Mag Na Port for it & maybe add Metalife & a Crimsontrace.com red lasergrip.
The .44spl is great for defense or CCW.
Id use either the MagSafe, Glaser Safety Slugs/silver or PowRball. The Speer Gold Dots & Buffalo Bore .44spl loads are good too.
I feel a frangible or pre-fragmented load would do best for the Bulldog or any other snub .44/.44spl revolver.

My EDC. Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special.
Loaded with shortened .44 Mag brass, Blue Dot powder, and 240 gr Hornady XTP JHP. Which comes out of the Bulldog at 950 fps on average.

Another .44 lover checking in.

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...":

1. Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk; 5 1/2"
2. Uberti Cattleman; 4 3/4"
3. Cimarron Model "P"; 5 1/2"
4. Uberti 1872 Open Top; 7 1/2"
5. S&W 24-3; 4"
6. Charter Arms Bulldog (Old School); 3"
7. Colt Single Action (3rd Gen); 4 3/4"

Seems like I'm forgetting one. I better run to the safe and count...

Count me in as a 44 special lover as well. A Charter Bulldog rests in my nightstand.

I only have two .44 Special handguns. Both are Model 720's with adjustable sights.
I have owned a lot of different revolvers in mostly .357 Magnum and spent years shooting mostly a S&W Model 19 . The K-frame S&W is a splended gun.

Then one day a few years back my LGS friend gave me his Rossi Model 720 to do a smoothing, and general action job on it. I was impressed with the gun and ended up buying three of them, of which I sold one. In poor health now and selling out most of my guns, but one of those 720's I hope to sneak into where ever I'm going after I leave this life.

Love the gun, and the .44 Special cartridge.
