Which 44 Special to buy?

Oh quit whimping out and get a REAL gun. Sure you need a belt the width of a country road, and suspenders to carry it, not to mention a really baggy shirt to conceal, but it does get attention when you pull it out. Plus it has six shots not five.

S&W 21-4

Seriously, if I wanted a 44 special for carry, I'd probably look for an old Charter Bulldog. Nothing against the new ones, I'd get one if I couldn't find an old one, but old is always my first choice. The two Charter 38's I've got are good solid guns.

I'm a big fan of the S&W M-19 4" bbl., and i do carry one in 357 mag., but i also sometimes carry one in 44 spl. too,

I owned numerous 44spl.'s over the years, but this is the 44 spl. i like best.

As long as we're looking for guns they don't make: +1 on the Smith 296. 19 oz.

PS: they still make the 329 Nightguard, which of course can fire .44 Special. 29 oz, pricey.

Not counting the SAA's in 44 special, I have 6 others. 2 each of the Taurus model 441, 1 M431, Original Charter Arms Bulldog with a 3" barrel, A smith M21 and finally an original hand ejector.

To say I like 44 special is an understatement. I don't own a Rossi and from what I have read, that is an oversight on my part.

I carry the 3" Taurus or the 3" Charter but when I hunt I carry the handejector.

Love em all

they [strike]make[/strike] made a 396 night guard.
Fixed that for you.

Unfortunately, the 396NG is both OOP and rapidly appreciating in price. The last one I saw (admittedly NIB) was going for well over $1000.

Unfortunately, the 329 is a 6-shot, N frame revolver as opposed to the smaller and lighter 5-shot, L frame 396, making the 396 a much better choice for CCW.

I have a 431 and a DAO Bulldog. I have formerly owned a DAO 720. The 431 is a bit bulky for some CCW but I like it. The Charter I favor for CCW. I don't want to run the Rossi down, I simply favor the others.

I love my 2009 production Charter Bulldog. I barely even notice it in an IWB holster or in my coat pocket half the time. It may not be as fancy as some of the other options out there, but it's gone bang every time I've pulled the trigger and never had any malfunctions. My only gripe with it is it could use a bobbed hammer, but that's easy enough to change.

I'd love to have a 696, but there prices are just out of sight these days. For that kind of money, I'd honestly rather have a 3.5" or 5" Model 27 that's been on my wish list for years.

But for $268, I do love my Taurus 431 3". I've got an IWB holster on order from FIST, so it will get added to my carry rotation pretty soon.

Nice pic!

That was partly my reasons for not getting the S&W was the price is out of sight.

I wore out an old CA bobbed hammer, 2.5" bbl Bulldog Pug; it was well used when I got it and I shot it often for 15 years or so. I loved it. Also, kudos to CA for their effort to fix the unreliable cylinder rotation on something that was, basically, made by an ancient ancestor of the current corporation at no charge to me. Sadly the repair helped but didn't get me back to the total reliability I require in a carry piece. I haven't seen a new or used one in an LGS and haven't seen the new DAO 2.5 at a show for a reasonable enough price. I may have to go get lgs to order me one....

Neither. Can't go wrong with the S&W 624 with 3" barrel.
