I've got a question which may sound very simple for some of you guys. Both rounds .45 Schofield and .45 Colt are same caliber, but Schofield is slightly shorter correct? Similar to what a .44 Special is to .44 Magnum, .38 special is to .357 or but not like .22WRF is to .22MRF (WMR) since they are the same length also both .224. more like a .22 long vs. .22 long rifle both .220
example In my Ruger Vaquero I could shoot .44 special or magnum. or my GP100 I could shoot .38 spl and .357 magnum.

Why wouldn't an American Derringer set up for .45 colt and .410 accept and shoot .45 Schofield as well? Are they not a compatible variation? THANKS!

If other assumptions or statements are off kilter please validate too. PEACE.

The .45 S&W Schofield has a larger diameter rim for more reliable simultaneous extraction in the top-break S&W revolvers. A Colt SAA will accomodate the S&W, a Ruger may take some work on the ratchet to clear. I don't know about the derringer.

I shot the .45 Schofield in my S&W 625MG and Ruger Bisley BH, Vaquero, RH, & .454 SRH. The only problem was with my Rossi/Puma M1892 - they wouldn't pass through the gate and reload via lever action. They could be singly loaded, tediously, discharged, and ejected. I won't widen the gate - it's operation with .45 Colts is too dependable as is.

There is no reason not to use the round in your derringer so long as the gun locks up okay. Whether or not the slighter wider rim would matter is something you can easily check. However, there is not much point in using it. The .45 Colt can be loaded down easily. The advantage of the Schofield round is that it takes a lighter black powder load because of the smaller case. You can't load down the Colt with BP without resorting to breakfast food as a filler which is decidedly unchristian.
