Hello friends,

I have a few different bullets I want to experiment with for the 454 casull. I have a variety of functional objectives in mind as I begin to reload for this cartridge and when it comes to hunting loads and cast lead plinking loads I think I know what I'm going for, but I have a hankering to try and shoot a solid coppper projectile extremely fast and I want to talk about that.

The firearm we are loading for is a Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull 7.5" with a Leupold 2.5-8x32 scope.

Scope: https://www.leupold.com/vx-3-handgun-25-8x32-duplex-riflescope

135gn solid copper: https://lehighdefense.com/452-caliber-135-grain-xtreme-defense-lead-free-bullets-50-count.html

205gn solid copper: https://lehighdefense.com/452-caliber-205-grain-xtreme-defense-lead-free-bullets-50-count.html

220gn solid copper: https://lehighdefense.com/452-caliber-220-grain-xtreme-defense-lead-free-bullets-50-count.html

250gn solid copper: https://lehighdefense.com/452-caliber-250-grain-xtreme-penetrator-lead-free-bullets-50-count.html

The only one of these bullets with any 454 load data is the 250gn extreme penetrator, but I was thinking I could really get that 135 zipping if I could find a load for it. I don't trust quickload with my life but I was going to play around with it and see what a bunch of H110 or Lil' Gun would do theoretically.

Has anyone tried supercharging any of these light solid coppers? Any experiences?

Wow thanks I actually checked their site but couldn't seem to get those filters working for 454. I only found loads for the 250 and 300. Thanks a lot!

The 135 grain one will be your winner in a speed contest.

Might look into “Sabots”. Maddi Griffin sold them for the 50 BMG, had load data for 180gn bullets over 5000fps.

Remington used them for their “accelerator” line, generally over 4000 fps.

You are going to need to move the chronograph further out though, too close to the muzzle and it’s going to mess up your readings. Need enough room for it to let go of the bullet and miss the chrono.

5000 fps sounds like you have a varmit pistol. Being that the bullet is 135 vs 40 grains you can probably splat yotes.

Some of those solid copper bullets are surprisingly soft. I would watch for copper buildup in the bore if you're going to shoot a high volume of max loads. I never had any luck with accuracy with the solid coppers in 44 magnum or 9mm. Hornady XTPs were way more accurate even when pushed to max loads and beyond.

50BMG and 50 cal pistol are two different sizes. 50BMG is.510, 50 pistol is .50.

A sabot round allows the use of a smaller sub caliber projectile. The Maadi Griffin sabots were junk as are most aftermarket ones.

The problem is with the sabot or shoe, large companies and the .gov have plenty of money to spend.

Aftermarket just drop in and don't hold the bullet.

These are actually screwed into the sabot and release upon firing.
